Manhattanites Screening Tonight

We will be screening my film, Manhattanites tonight in Los Angeles. I'll try to live tweet some of the event in between schmoozing. If you have not purchased a copy of the film, you can buy the DVD at Amazon.com. While you're there, check out "Absolutely Shouldless" from We Love Soaps' Damon L. Jacobs.

News Round-up: GL, VENICE, Morgan/Williams, Lytton

Future of daytime TV a hot topic at Emmys
Susan Lucci said fans shouldn’t take the cancellation of GUIDING LIGHT as a sign the entire daytime-drama genre is in trouble.

“I think it’s like nighttime TV. Just because one show gets cancelled doesn’t mean nighttime TV is out the window. But ABC is showing a huge vote of confidence by moving (the New York-based) ALL MY CHILDREN to L.A., they wanted to expand not contract. So I think our situation is a very, very positive one.”

That is, for some of the ALL MY CHILDREN cast. Debbi Morgan, who has been with the show on and off since 1982, may not make the cross-country trip with her colleagues. Morgan was married just last June, and the couple is still discussing the possibility of pulling up stakes.

“We are going back to the kitchen table because I love, love, love my husband,” Morgan said. “I love waking up with him every morning, and going to sleep with him every night. And I love my job.”

EDITOR'S NOTE: Darnell Williams confirmed to We Love Soaps that he is indeed making the move to LA.

An institution ends when GUIDING LIGHT turns off
You don't have to be a fan of the show, or of the soap opera genre it pioneered, to feel a sense of gravity at the demise of GUIDING LIGHT.

"It's been reflecting American life back at America since before World War II," said GUIDING LIGHT executive producer Ellen Wheeler.

"We are the history of so many people," added veteran leading lady Tina Sloan. "They watched it for so long."

INTERVIEW: VENICE Co-Creator Kim Turrisi
"The character of Gina and the concept of VENICE has been around for a long time. Crystal, who is a very savvy business woman said to me, “We should do a web series,” and we built it around that. Venice is a slice of life from the beach. We both love the beach. Venice is Bohemian, it’s diverse – it’s a slice of life. The key for us for this series is the portrayal of the characters, and writing them as strong, as decisive, as real. For the first season – I will be the only writer. And we wanted to do a web series because we wanted to have and maintain creative control and to show a realistic portrayal. This project is really a labor of love."

Drop earrings win big at Daytime Emmys
While fashion designers showing their Fall 2009 apparel collections on runways this year tended to focus their jewelry wardrobing on the necks and wrists, stars on the red carpet at the 36th annual Daytime Emmy Awards showed ears the love, favoring drop and hoop styles as the accessories of the night.

Lytton talks about upset at leaving EASTENDERS
Louisa Lytton was devastated when she left EASTENDERS: "I went straight into it at the age of 16. I did two years. It was very surreal. You are at school one day and then within a week I was on the set filming. It was all new to me and I loved it. I was so lucky, just the fact that I was working. "From the age of 11, all I ever wanted to do was to work, and so to be appearing on a massive TV series was just amazing. It was upsetting at the time. Leaving 'EastEnders' was not my choice."

ROMANOVICH: Post-Mortem on the Daytime Emmys

Associated Television International's (ATI) president of Worldwide Media and Entertainment Jim Romanovich, one of the executive producers of this year's Daytime Emmy telecast, shared his thoughts on the show and the ratings with We Love Soaps.

People should know that Broadcasting & Cable, a reputable trade magazine, counted the one hour red carpet show, which was NOT in prime time, as part of the awards ceremony. We actually did over a 2 HH rating and closer to 2.8 or more million viewers. Here’s what Nielsen said as far as the CW was concerned:

Vs. CW's prior 4-week time period average (movies), the Daytime Emmy Awards telecast up +81% in total viewers, +122% in HH, +50% in W18-49, +57% in W25-54, +20% in W18-34, +20% in A18-49, +17% in A25-54 and +25% in A18-34.

I also want the viewers to understand that I was very clear from the beginning about ratings. If I counted on ratings to save this show, I would have been on a fool’s mission. It was never about beating what ABC did. I said in interviews that the CW on its BEST night cannot beat ABC on its WORST night. That’s just the way it is. But if you compare apples to apples, you’d see a much different picture. So we knew going into this, and we publicly stated as such, that we would not do as well as ABC did last year because of the overall difference between ABC and the CW. But what matters most is that the comments were overwhelmingly positive by advertisers, producers, actors, fans, and the Academy. The majority of fans loved the show from my emails and from what I read. The general negative comments were that someone won over their choice-which is beyond my control. The CW had a hard out at 10pm, as well as restrictions on other portions of the show, which is why certain segments seemed abrupt. Vanessa Williams was a huge hit!

But you got your show. It was classy and entertaining (watch the audience as they were definitely having a good time), and flew by. My only critique is that if the CW affiliates were smart, they would have allowed us to go over by five minutes because those items that were short would have been seen.

I want to thank the fans most of all. Honestly. I believe in being heard. You fans may have loved certain moments in the show or hated certain moments in the show. You praise me one moment and threaten to kill me the next. That’s what I love about you. It’s never dull! You believe in your shows and you’ll fight to the death for them. How could anybody not admire that? I do. Whatever you feel about this show is valid because they’re your feelings and they’re personal to you. I, and all of ATI, care about them and tried to do what was best for all of daytime and especially the soaps. We said we were going to give you a fast paced entertainment driven show and we did. No regrets on our part. As a matter of fact, it was a great success! As I said, the response given to me personally from the daytime community at the theatre was overwhelming. We can’t control what the CW does or allows.

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.

2010? The ball’s in our court. Nobody else’s.

Thanks for all your hard work this year, Jim!

Daytime Emmy Fashion & Best Dressed List

Despite the sweltering heat of downtown Los Angeles, the daytime community donned their evening dresses, gowns and tuxes and made their way down the red carpet of the Daytime Emmy Awards on Sunday. Dozens of stars stopped to talk to We Love Soaps along the way. We'll be posting an Emmy Wrap Video Podcast on Wednesday from Venice Beach which will include a segment with the locals and some tourists from the home of Crystal Chappell's new web series.

There was a lot of fabulous fashion this year but I have narrowed my best dressed list down to ten (okay, eleven).

1. Nadia Bjorlin - She has to be the most beautiful woman in the planet. Bjorlin and Brandom Beemer are so beautiful in person they don't even seem human. A+ all around.
2. Noelle Beck - She's an angel on the inside and a true beauty on the outside. She was rockin' a hot blue dress.
3. Susan Lucci - She may not alway be the best but the elegant Lucci is always near the top.
4. Van Hansis - Loved the jacket and hair and we didn't get a good picture of this but have some great video (coming soon).
5. Lesli Kay - I wasn't sure if I loved or hated her white gown at first, but settled on love.
6. Elizabeth Hendrickson - It was funky and different and somebody had to shake this event up.
7. Tamara Braun - I think she is getting more beautiful every year.
8. Sarah Brown - All the former Carlys were looking hot on Sunday.
9. Bobbie Eakes - She looked like she was ready for a party and that's what this event is all about.
10 (tie). Marcy Rylan - Anyone who can look that good just weeks before her baby is born is a winner with me. And her finace Don Money looked incredibly handsome as well.
10 (tie). Taylor Spreitler - She would have been higher but she left her beautiful dog, Pearl, at home! Spreitler is a future superstar.

Honorable Mentions:
Most Practical: Judith Chapman. I wouldn't normally like this ensemble but it was perfect for 100 degree weather.
Best Old School County Hairdo: Julie Berman. She looked like the love child of classic Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette. And that is just fine!
Most Colorful: Tonya Lee Williams. I wouldn't wear this dress but Tonya is hot enough to pull it off.
Best Comeback: Brenda Dickson. It doesn't matter what she was wearing. It's Brenda Dickson!
Best Date: Stacy Haiduk. Stacy and Kitty stole the show on the red carpet.
Most Classic Beauty (tie): Suzanne Rogers and Colleen Zenk Pinter never age. Class acts all the way.

Daytime Emmy Ratings Are In, Best Sunday for CW

From Broadcasting & Cable:

The 36th Daytime Emmy Awards hit another record low on the CW Sunday night, a year after delivering its lowest ratings on ABC in June 2008. This year's show delivered a 0.5/2 from 7-10 p.m. and averaged 2.2 million viewers. It scored a 1.6/3 in households. That's a dramatic decrease even from last years' 4.1/8 household number and 5.3 million viewers.

The Daytime Emmys have steadily declined throughout the decade, drawing a fraction of the viewers that turned to it in the mid-‘90s. The high-water mark of the last two decades came in 1993 when the awards show averaged a 16.4 household rating and 21.9 million viewers.

ATI's JimRomanovich tweeted his thanks to fans for The CW's highest Sunday ratings this year.

Thank you fans for giving the CW its best ratings for a Sunday night this year! This was all because of you! Thank you!

Daytime Emmy Weekend Wrap Up

The We Love Soaps team arrived in Los Angeles on Friday and it has been a whirlwind ever since. The highlight for me personally was meeting so many of the WLS favorites like DAYS' Suzanne Rogers and James Reynolds, ATWT's Colleen Zenk Pinter, Y&R's Melody Thomas Scott and B&B's Susan Flannery. We logged countless hours of video at various events and will be publishing the interviews soon. We'll also be do an Emmy wrap up video podcast this week instead of our regular show.

As for the Daytime Emmy show on Sunday, Damon L. Jacobs and I arrived on the red carpet at 1pm. The show started at 5pm LA time. The first three hours were intense sun and heat and it was pretty unbearable as we waited for the actors to arrive. But talking to the stars above along with Bradford Anderson, Van Hansis, Jake Silbermann, Nadia Bjorlin, Elizabeth Hendrickson, Lindsay Hartley, Tom Pelphrey, Wally Kurth, Victoria Rowell and many, many more made it worthwhile.

We also have video footage from the press room as the winners were interviewed by the media.

We have lots of stories to share, interviews to be published, and many exciting new opportunities. Stay tuned.

PREVIEW: Tonight's GREEK

ABC Family presents another semester of theme parties, sisterhood rivalry and – oh yeah – making the grades with an all new season of GREEK, premiering tonight (9:00 – 10:00PM ET/PT). The series will return with ten all-new episodes airing through November.

GREEK picks up where it left off, with the events from last season’s “End of the World” party dramatically revealing themselves in the first episode entitled “The Day After.” After learning of Max’s departure, Cappie (Scott Michael Foster) wonders if he made the right decision by telling Casey he wasn’t interested in giving their relationship another chance, while Casey (Spencer Grammer) struggles with the aftermath of Cappie’s unexpected rejection; Rebecca’s (Dilshad Vadsaria) late night kiss with a mystery man can’t stay a secret for too long; and Rusty (Jacob Zachar) risks failing in o-chem and losing his honor status, while roommate Dale (Clark Duke) faces a huge moral dilemma.

And if campus drama weren’t enough, add family dynamics to the mix as ZBZ celebrates father-daughter weekend, with guest stars Kadeem Hardison (Ashleigh’s father, Brian), Thomas Calabro (Rebecca’s father, Senator Ken Logan), Tom Amandes (Jordan’s father, Jack) and Jerry Lambert (Casey’s father, Russell.)

Thanks to their less than stellar pledge class, the ZBZ house also begins sliding in the ranks among the other sorority houses. Casey, Rebecca and Ashleigh do everything they can to maintain their status as one of the top houses at Cyprus Rhodes. ZBZ pledge Abby (Olesya Rulin) drives Casey crazy when she expresses her disappointment in the lack of party invites and questions the sorority’s relationship with the popular fraternities.

Also, a new hottie waitress, Lana (Olivia Munn), hits the Cyprus-Rhodes scene and captures the eye of a big man on campus.

Created by Patrick Sean Smith, GREEK is executive produced by Piller/Segan in association with ABC Family. The cast includes Jacob Zachar as Rusty, Spencer Grammer as Casey, Scott Michael Foster as Cappie, Jake McDorman as Evan, Clark Duke as Dale, Dilshad Vadsaria as Rebecca, Paul James as Calvin, and Amber Stevens as Ashleigh.

IMAGINARY BITCHES at the Creative Emmys

The cast of IMAGINARY BITCHES posed on the red carpet at last night's Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. The show lost in the New Approaches / Entertainment category but has achieved amazing success in a short time and an Emmy nomination just shows that great things can come when talented people come together with a unique idea.

Damon L. Jacobs and I filmed an episode of IB on Saturday afternoon and had a blast. Look for more information in the near future at ImaginaryBitches.com.

TV GUIDE: Catching Up With Crystal Chappell

Daytime superstar Crystal Chappell spoke with TV Guide Magazine about returning to DAYS OF OUR LIVES and the end of GUIDING LIGHT's Otalia.

It was a very hard summer. We were on such a crazy, difficult schedule that we’d literally chase daylight trying to get scenes completed. “Quick! Everybody run over here! Set up the shot! Now run over there!” So I think by the end of it we were all exhausted—physically and emotionally. We were ready to move on, but it was sad. When the stage manager said for the last time, “GUIDING LIGHT, that’s a rap,” it really, really hit you.

GL's Jessica Leccia on Natalia's Curtain Call

Jessica Leccia spoke with Advocate.com about the last weeks of GUIDING LIGHT.

Everyone is going to be a little sad...the whole thing is just sad. I hope the fans can appreciate how the story ended or didn't end, or however they see it. Everybody really did the best they could, and no matter what, it's just going to be a little bittersweet. There was not a whole lot you can do, because the story has to be over and you really don't want the story to be over. I did not envy the writers at all.

EMMY GIFTING SUITE: AMC's Melissa Claire Egan

I spoke with ALL MY CHILDREN's Melissa Claire Egan (Annie) on Friday at the Daytime Emmy gifting suite about her Emmy nomination and the show's move to Los Angeles.

We Love Soaps: Not only are you presenting this year, but you are also nominated. Are you the type of person who gets nervous with anticipation?
Melissa Claire Egan: Not really. Granted it's only Friday but I really haven't been nervous at all. The whole thing is really exciting. The nomination is incredible and no matter what happens it's exciting. And I'm presenting with Cameron [Mathison] who is one of my best buddies and we're so goofy together. I'm just excited now and don't have any nerves as of now.

We Love Soaps: Have you had your dress for a while or are you a last minute shopper?
Melissa Claire Egan: I bought it about two weeks ago. I'm definitely not last minute but I didn't get it way in advance. The final fitting was three days ago, and I got my jewels the day before I left. So I wasn't panicked to get it done, but I wasn't way ahead of the game either. I love my dress. It's by designer Robert Dane and it's a beautiful blueish green gown, really romantic, and I love it.

We Love Soaps: And it will work in 100 degree weather?
Melissa Claire Egan: I don't think any gown works in that weather. I'm wearing my hair up this year for the first time so that will help.

We Love Soaps: Some people feel you are the favorite in your category. You play crazy as well as anyone. What do you attribute that to?
Melissa Claire Egan: [Laughs] I promise I'm not crazy in real life. I was lucky Chuck Pratt gave me some great material. When you read it, you're like, 'Oh my gosh, how am I going to do this?' but you just have to go for it. When you get that kind of good material, you feel lucky to have it, and you don't want to screw it up. You just go for it, give it your all, and do the best that you can.

We Love Soaps: Do you have any family here for the Emmys?
Melissa Claire Egan: My parents are coming in tomorrow. My Dad's my date for the Emmys. He has his tuxedo ready. I always wanted to bring my Dad as my date to an awards show, especially if I'm nominated.

We Love Soaps: Have you planned an acceptance speech?
Melissa Claire Egan: No. I've thought about some things I would say, but I haven't planned anything.

We Love Soaps: Sometimes it's harder for the nominees who don't win when the camera shows the split screen of all the reactions.
Melissa Claire Egan: I know! But I would be happy for any of them, especially Alicia [Minshew] because I adore her and think she's incredible. I would be thrilled if she won.

We Love Soaps: Are you excited about ALL MY CHILDREN's move to Los Angeles?
Melissa Claire Egan: I am. I'm excited that Disney and ABC care enough about our show to make the move. I love New York and I'm sad to leave there but I'm also excited about this new endeavor. I lived in LA for three years and have a lot of good friends here.

Here are some of the latest soap opera videos to hit the web.

MY LITTLE GIRL CALLED ME: Holly, played by the fabulous Maureen Garrett, returned to Springfield on Wednesday's GUIDING LIGHT.

DON'T PUSH HER: Johnny was frustrated with Claudia on Thursday's GENERAL HOSPITAL, but Olivia encouraged him to let her bring herself down but not to push her.

News Round-up: Emmys, Heathers, Fios, A&E

L.A. TIMES: Daytime Emmy Awards work for a memorable night
"We've returned the glamour to these awards to match the glamour of that old theater and beautiful building," said executive producer David McKenzie, president of Associated Television International. "The Orpheum is one of the greatest assets we have in this city and we need to preserve all of these theaters that exist downtown."

"It's been one continuous goodbye party for the last month because we've celebrated four different times already, but I expect to get a little misty-eyed on Sunday," said Kim Zimmer, who played Reva on GUIDING LIGHT for 21 years. "It's joyful and sad at the same time and it will be wonderful to be on stage with everyone one last time."

Can Daytime Emmys come off life support?
In trying to remove itself from life support, the kudocast is making a major move this year from Hollywood to downtown Los Angeles. After much haggling with different venues and networks, the event is being held at the Orpheum Theater and will air on the CW.

"As sad as we are that the show has ended, you have to be grateful and marvel at how long the show was able to survive," says Grant Aleksander, who has appeared on GUIDING LIGHT on and off since 1982.

Although there were a slew of GUIDING LIGHT vets to introduce the tribute for the show, producers have selected TV institution Betty White to do the honors.

"(Betty's) career is certainly analogous to GUIDING LIGHT in that both have weathered a lot of different transitions," says Aleksander.

Fox, Sony TV look to revive Heathers
Fox is developing a contemporary take on the 1989 Christian Slater/Winona Ryder feature Heathers. The original movie revolved around Veronica as she navigates a clique of mean girls -- all named Heather -- and rebels after meeting J.D., the new guy at school. Soon, the Heathers start "accidentally" dying at the hands of Veronica and J.D., who cover up the deaths by faking them as suicides. Ryder's character chronicles her teen angst and the rising body count with regular diary entries.

    A&E Networks, Lifetime Merger Completed
Disney-ABC, Hearst Corporation and NBC Universal said officially they are to become partners in a new venture which rolls womens oriented service Lifetime into their jointly owned A&E Networks stable.

Verizon's Fios to Trial Online Access to TV Shows
Verizon is planning to give Fios TV subscribers access to programming online as part of its involvement in the Time Warner spearheaded initiative, TV Everywhere. As part of a new deal, confirmed Thursday by both companies, content from two Time Warner networks, TNT and TBS, will be available online with more shows from other providers expected to come on stream in the coming months.

    Degrassi Goes Hollywood Goes Toronto!

The cast of the new DEGRASSI movie Paradise City: Degrassi Goes Hollywood gathered for the Toronto premiere screening last night at the Bloor Cinema. Pictured are Adamo Ruggiero (Marco) and Lauren Collins (Paige). Look for transcripts of our interview with them in the near future.

Letterman: Anne Heche and The Ex

Former ANOTHER WORLD Emmy winer Anne Heche (Vicky/Marley) made a strong case against marriage Wednesday night when she told David Letterman her ex-husband was a "lazy ass."

Six months ago her long and bitter divorce battle with Coley Laffoon finally ended, leaving him with a big settlement and shared custody of their seven-year-old son, Homer, but the feud continues. "It's funny because you can't quite let go of the ex," she said.

When asked what Laffoon does for a living, the actress said, "He goes out to the mailbox and he opens up the little mailbox door and goes, 'Oh! I got a check from Anne! Oh! I got a check from Anne! Yay!'"

    Daytime Emmy Promo

Here is the promo for the 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which air on Sunday, August 30 at 8pm ET on The CW, with a red carpet special at 7pm ET.

News Round-up: Emmys, Haskell, Cosgrove, Jones, Drea

ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Susan Haskell on her Emmy nomination
"I've gotta say, it's nice," she allows of being a nominee again. "I am not going to be shy about that. The character has always been fantastic, and when they give you a story where you get to do something that's really interesting, it's a nice treat. The whole thing of finding out you have a son, while not really having your memory, that's pretty crazy. I enjoy that kind of work, when it's that meaty. It's not that you can't separate what's real from what isn't, but you go home a little more tired than usual, that's for sure."

Alas, the Daytime Emmys, here at last
In an interview with Media Life, Nelson Branco discusses this year's Daytime Emmy Awards: "The Emmys always surprise everyone. It’s really unpredictable because they’re voting on one episode."

GUIDING LIGHT's Daniel Cosgrove on being a "lead actor"
"You think, 'There are people who have been here a long time, so they're the lead actors,' " he says. "It's a weird thing. If the story's based around you, you can look at it as though you're the lead actor in that case."

Soap Dish: The 25 Grooviest Guys and Gals of GUIDING LIGHT
Deep Dish takes a look at the 25 Grooviest Guys and Gals of Springfield.

Marc Cherry on Drea de Matteo’s DESPERATE HOUSEWIVE character
“I don’t see Drea as a replacement for Nicolette [Sheridan],” he says. “Her character is more a replacement for Neal [McDonough] in that she’s [the focus] of the new mystery.” Cherry goes on to describe Drea’s matriarch, Angie Bolen, as “a very loving but tough Italian woman who comes [to Wisteria Lane] with her husband and her kid. They’re running from something. We understand through her actions in the first couple of episodes that she’s a smart woman who will do what she has to to protect her family.”

    INTERVIEW: B&B's Ashley Jones (Bridget)
On doing double duty on B&B and TRUE BLOOD: "It wasn’t easy but it was an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down. It also came at a time in my life when it was okay to push myself. I don’t have kids or a partner. It’s just me and Scottie. I’d sneak him into my trailer and we’d hang out together between scenes."

Students take show on road — to Scotland
Students with the Palm Springs High School Theater Department will perform a production of “You Can't Take It With You” during this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. The students will participate along with cast members from ALL MY CHILDREN and DAYS OF OUR LIVES as part of the American High School Theater Festival venue. The performance will take place Sept. 25-27. For more information contact Palm Springs High School theater director Scott DiLorenzo at (760)778-0419.

News Round-up: Barash, Betty, Howarth, Real Housewives

THE WRAP: Can the REAL HOUSEWIVES Franchise Save Daytime Soaps?
Josef Adalian writes: "NBC Universal's syndication unit has struck a deal with NBC and Hearst-owned TV stations to syndicate HOUSEWIVES as a one-hour, five-days-a-week strip starting in 2010. Assuming most NBC and Hearst stations air HOUSEWIVES in the daytime hours, the show could serve as an interesting experiment regarding the future of soap operas. HOUSEWIVES plays as a soap, but because it's unscripted, its production costs are a fraction of what networks pay for traditional serials. If repeats of "Housewives" do particularly well, it could prompt one of the networks to explore the idea of launching a first-run unscripted soap in daytime."

    TiVo sues AT&T and Verizon
Unable to strike a deal with either of the major phone companies that offer TV services, TiVo on Wednesday sued them both. TiVo filed its DVR patent infringement lawsuits against AT&T and Verizon in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Texas, where it has been battling -- mostly successfully -- Dish Network for five years.

    ATWT's Roger Howarth selling condo
Howarth has dropped the price of the three-bedroom condo on Greenwich Street he shares with wife Cari Stahler. The sixth-floor pad, which the couple bought for $2.075 million in 2005 and listed for $3.195 million in March of this year, is now listed for $2.999 million.

GH's Brandon Barash named a Muscular Dystrophy Association National Celebrity Ambassador
By making public appearances at MDA events, starring in public service announcements and giving news media interviews, Barash will help raise public awareness of MDA’s battle against muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases.

Susan Lucci, Anthony Geary, Kelly Monaco used DXG HD camcorders in Kenya
Taking viewers behind the scenes in a special “Daytime Gives Back” segment for the 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, stars such as Susan Lucci, Anthony Geary, Kelly Monaco, Montel Williams, Erik Estrada, Kyle Massey and Devon Werkheiser will be using DXG-595V camcorders to film and share their experiences with Emmy viewers, and for the production of a separate special program, “Kenya, How We See It”. The 36 Annual Daytime Emmy Awards and the “Daytime Gives Back” segment will air on the CW Network on August 30th. “Kenya, How We See It” is scheduled to air this fall.

CW Holds VAMPIRE DIARIES-Themed Blood Drives
The "Starve a Vampire. Donate Blood" initiative, which began Aug. 25 and runs for five weeks, will hit up more than 230 high schools and college campuses across the nation. It encourages students to donate blood through the American Red Cross.

Daytime Emmy predix: ONE LIFE TO LIVE star Susan Haskell will win best actress
That's according to two Gold Derby soap gurus.

Ugly Betty's worst outfit yet? America Ferrera dresses as a hotdog
The actress slipped into an oversized hot dog costume on set in New York yesterday.

Former AMC and DYNASTY star Michael Nader to guest on COLD CASE
Nader guest stars on the season premiere on Sept. 27 as a dashing man with whom the victim shared a shipboard romance.

Daytime Emmy Predictions: A Pundit Round-up

Picking winners for the Daytime Emmy Awards is probably an exercise in futility as the rules change yearly, the voting panels are always different, and there is only one round of judging these days. But it's still fun to watch the reels and guess who will win. Below is a round-up of the We Love Soaps picks along with some other noted soap pundits. In some cases, the experts chose a "Should Win" and "Will Win" nominee and the "Will Win" pick is what is included here. Others may be added to this table later.

VOTE: Best Same Sex Soap of 2009

Five of the eight daytime soaps are currently telling or have told same sex storylines in 2009. Although none have been perfect, there has been a lot of good to go along with some bad. Which soap do you feel has done the best job of portraying gay characters and same sex relationships? DAYS OF OUR LIVES, GENERAL HOSPITAL and (inexplicably) THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL do not qualify. At least next year when the GLAAD nominations come out, they will have options in the Daytime category versus going with one or two shows by default.

    The nominees:
ALL MY CHILDREN: Featured the heavily promoted first same sex wedding between Bianca and Reese. It was a beautiful ceremony but marred by Reese's relationship with Zach. The couple finally received a happy ending before leaving town together a few months later.

AS THE WORLD TURNS: Luke and Noah finally had sex in January, Brian came out of the closet and left town, and Zac pretended to be gay to try and steal the Grimaldi fortune. Luke and Noah have remained together as a couple throughout the year while dealing with a murder story, evil twins, Noah's father and Holden's death.

GUIDING LIGHT: The slow burning developing of the Olivia and Natalia love story lead to a hugely dramatic and emotional week as Natalia rejected Frank on their wedding day. Doris was revealed to be a lesbian and became a friend to Olivia while struggling to keep her sexuality from her daughter. Later, Natalia turned up pregnant by Frank but was determined to win Olivia back.

ONE LIFE TO LIVE: Kyle and Fish were lovers in college but Officer Fish is now deeply in denial in the closet. While Kyle yearned for Fish, Fish began dating Layla. Eventually Kyle met Nick and the two of them are now dating much to Fish's chagrin.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Rafe was revealed to be gay and it was treated like no big deal for a change. News Round-up: Bradford Anderson, Hastings, Leighton

GH's Bradford Anderson "not as ugly in real life"
"The fact that they spend five days a week with us, there's a familiarity between the viewers and us that I don't think exists in any other medium," Anderson said during a quick break between hosting duties during Saturday's event at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth. "It's the main reason these events are so special."

"You're so much better looking in person!" is an oft-repeated greeting, he says. "My job on the show is not to be good-looking – and it's not my job in real life, either – but people say, 'You're not as ugly in real life as you are on TV.' I appreciate that!"

Don Hastings’ World is Still Turning
The Hollywood Reporter's Roger Friedman writes: "So here’s to Don Hastings. He’s not on the show as often as he once was, but it’s August, and the younger stars are away. The show is featuring their “vets” for once. It’s very refreshing. Dr. Bob seems to have dementia, but it’s no doubt curable. Soap diseases are fatal until they’re not. Dead people always return from the grave. And Dr. Bob is about to celebrate 50 years. He’s great. If you watch him, he has a sly sense of humor. He knows the score. He’s got everyone’s number. Sometimes, he looks like his thought balloon is a snarky quip you’d love to hear. In a way, he’s the Leslie Nielsen of soaps. And this month, he’s being featured (along with his terrific soap wife, Kathryn Hays.) Good for him! A leading man at 75. It gives us all hope."

    INTERVIEW: GL's Grant Aleksander (Phillip)
"All of the changes that were made to the production of GL were motivated by the need to save money. People - and not just the actors, but the camera operators, the lighting people, everyone - should be really proud of what's been acheived. Every single person involved had to jump into the deep end and learn to swim, and I'm incredibly impressed by how people made it work."

Alison Sweeney Partners with California Raisins

More than 12 million children in America are at risk of hunger. Despite classrooms being back in session - a time when many children will find some relief in going back to the free or reduced-price school meals - help is still needed on weekends and school breaks when assistance is not available. That's why California Raisins, Monday, announced a partnership with DAYS OF OUR LIVES actress and host of the hit television show, THE BIGGEST LOSER, Alison Sweeney to raise awareness about Feeding America's childhood hunger initiatives, including the Backpack Program.

"As a mom, I recognize the importance proper nutrition plays in the school performance and overall development of young children," says actress Alison Sweeney. "That's why I'm proud to partner with California Raisins in its efforts to raise awareness of Feeding America's childhood hunger initiatives like the Backpack Program."

Daytime Emmys: The Show Must Go On

On Tuesday, Variety published a story on the Daytime Emmy telecast which airs this Sunday at 8pm on The CW. Associated Television Intl. president David McKenzie spoke about the show, how his company became involved, and the future.

"It's tough for the networks because of the economy," McKenzie said. "They're running fairly scared... (but) when we heard that the Daytime Emmys was having trouble getting on TV, we stubbed our toes on this and said, 'That's just not right.' We called in a lot of folks we've known for a long time and told them, 'We don't want this to go away, don't you agree?' "

That's when ATI's Jim Romanovich contacted the NATAS to see if there was a way to help. ATI then brought MGM onboard.

MGM made sense because it already controlled a block of primetime, at least until the end of summer: the CW's Sunday night, where it runs a movie package. As a result, the CW isn't paying a traditional license fee for the Daytime Emmys but instead has a unique advertising relationship with NATAS, ATI and MGM for the telecast.

Because of the 11th hour save, the Daytime Emmys had to be pushed from its traditional early summer home to Aug. 30 -- which puts it smack in the middle of Emmy season for NATAS' Los Angeles rival, the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences.

But McKenzie believes that could benefit the Daytime Emmys (which take place a night after ATAS throws its annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards show), as some of the Primetime Emmy hoopla potentially rubs off.

"This is not a bad time for it," he said. "We'll be interested to see how it does. Maybe it goes back to May or June; that remains to be seen. But I've seen in my years of marketing that when you group something like this together, for some reason they feed one another."

As for next year, ATI and MGM are already onboard, while the CW has the first option to bring it back. But should the Dub pass on it, McKenzie said he's confident he'll be able to find another home for the show -- or even clear it in syndication.
