Marlena De Lacroix's Emmy Predictions
"I’m not overly excited about this week’s Daytime Emmys. I could be fluffy and say it’s because they moved the ceremony to L.A. several years ago and I don’t get to go and to buy a dress, and to me (I attended here in New York 23 years in a row) the Daytime Emmys was always about The Dress. But the truth is, daytime drama, which I’ve spent most of life my loving, is a collapsing industry, and I just don’t feel very celebratory."

BLOG UPDATE: Joe Diliberto
"Don't call them cougars, but AS THE WORLD TURNS' Kim, Susan and Lisa not only got lines on the same day, they were all organically integrated into front-burner storylines involving ... uh, less-mature actresses. Marie Masters' Susan defended daughter Alison's lawsuit from Kim's criticism. Kathryn Hays' Kim quite rightly defended Chris and the proud Hughes name. It was also a nice wink to fans when Susan brought up her tryst with Bob as grounds for Kim to hate Ali. While Kim has also been seen lurking in the periphery of the Katie/Brad/Janet hijinks at WOAK, when was the last time we saw Eileen Fulton's wonderful Lisa? Yesterday, Paul asked Lisa to boot nutty Sofie out of the Lakeview, but then changed his mind and asked her to the let the troubled young woman stay."

Where soap fans go to lather up
Fans of soapcentral.com have come to expect timely casting and plot alerts about their favorite daytime dramas from the Web site. And they get a little steamed when that doesn't happen. "I get these angry messages, saying, 'You should fire all the people who work for you,' " says Dan J. Kroll, the site's founder. "It's a great compliment that people think that this is the product of a large organization. They don't realize it's just me in my pajamas trying to get the items done so I can go get something to eat."

INTERVIEW: DAYS star Arianne Zucker
"'m having a blast. I am having such a great time. Part of it is because, every time I pick up a script, I giggle. I think that between the writing and everyone behind the scenes and in front of the scenes, Days is such a positive place to be that you can't help but have a great time. On top of that, I'm the character who gets to say what everyone is thinking! No filter! It is a blast. And now you're seeing some layers with her – a little bit."

TV Squad Soap Report: Dead but not gone
Death on a daytime soap is kind of like death in science fiction: it may be the real thing, but then again, maybe not.

ATWT Casting Notice

ATWT has put out a casting notice for the character of Randi, a female cop who shares scenes with Henry and Mike per the audition script. In the audition scene, Henry and Randi are in the Lakeview dining room and Henry is trying to get Randi to go on a real date with him and to forget about Mike. Randi isn't interested but Henry finally makes her see that Mike isn't around or interested so she agrees.

These audition scripts are sometimes nothing like what would actually play out on the show so take it with a grain of salt.

News Brief

INTERVIEW: ATWT Emmy nominee Van Hansis
Michael Fairman has a wonderful interview with Van Hansis on his ONSOAP site which includes audio clips. Hansis: "I think it’s difficult if you don’t know why your character is doing what he is doing. Your job as an actor is to figure it out, even if it has to be the natural thing the character would do. On soaps, no character learns from their mistakes. So, you will come across issues that a person did in real life and they do not make those mistakes again. But with soaps, you have to suspend that part of your brain and do what is asked of you."

Emmy excitement is no act for DAYS stars
Thaao Penghlis: "Normally, when you are living in another country, you usually share this kind of news with a phone call to the family. My initial reaction was shock. I have found in life that when you expect something, it doesn't happen."

Rachel Melvin: "What you have to remember is I never won anything in my life. I never got the roles in plays. Not cheerleader. Nothing. She [her mother] told me that all of the people who got the play roles, when they got to Hollywood, they would not be able to handle the rejection as well as I could."

The 49-year-old star, who missed two days of filming, has gone back to work with a splint in his arm.

BLOG UPDATE: Sara A. Bibel "(Gay) Pride and Prejudice"
"Luke and Noah’s romance on As The World Turns is one of the hottest stories on soaps right now. Multiple sites post their scenes on-line and analyze their every move. The story has generated mainstream media attention and increased interest in the long-running soap among the sort of hip, young viewers the genre is dying to attract."

Producer Robert Calhoun dies at 77

Robert Calhoun, best known to soap fans for his runs as Executive Producer at AS THE WORLD TURNS and GUIDING LIGHT has passed away. He died of lung cancer in New York on May 24th at age 77. Calhoun won a 1987 Daytime Emmy Award for producing AS THE WORLD TURNS and was nominated for five more Emmys as a producer and two as a director.

Calhoun's work over the years ranged from helping to launch the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles to translating Italian film scripts into English while working in Italy in the early 1970s.

Calhoun was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from the U. of Maryland, after serving three years in the U.S. Navy. His early work in the theater included a stint as production supervisor for Eva Le Gallienne's National Repertory Theater, during productions of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" and Anton Chekhov's "The Seagull," where he met his lifelong partner, the actor Farley Granger, in 1963.

Calhoun subsequently moved to Southern California, where he worked on early productions at the Mark Taper Forum. In 1970, Calhoun moved to Italy with Granger, and spent several years living in Rome. He went back in the mid-1970s to Southern California and the Mark Taper, where he directed plays for the New Theater for Now program.

After a few years, he returned to New York to work in daytime television.

Calhoun was co-author of Granger's memoir, "Include Me Out," which was published in 2007.

He is survived by Granger, two brothers and a sister.

Soap Watch: Antonio Sabato Jr. in GH spinoff
EW.com has confirmed that Antonio Sabato Jr. will be reprising his role as Jagger Cates on the second season of the GENERAL HOSPITAL spinoff NIGHT SHIFT. Sabato is scheduled to appear in all 13 episodes of the second season, which debuts in late July. Sabato was on GH steadily from 1992-94, and last appeared in 1995 around the time that his on-screen brother, Stone, was dying of AIDS. His presence on NIGHT SHIFT should stir things up for a pregnant Robin (Kimberly McCullough); she is still very emotionally connected to Stone, who was her first love, and Patrick, her baby daddy. Jagger was also previously married to the now-dead Karen Wexler, who had worked as a stripper for Sonny when he was an up-and-coming mobster.

News Brief

Happy Father's Day - Soap dad's reflect
Jack Wagner (Nick Marone, B&B): "The best part is always watching them grow. It is such a bizarre process. To watch them grow, you have to grow with them. You have to understand when they want to be let go. It is a different world than when I grew up. Kids are into computers and cell phones, and that is a whole disconnect compared to the way I grew up. I have to constantly adjust and understand it more before I can discipline it. It is finding a way to participate in their life, which is so unlike the one I grew up in."

Shawn Christian (Dr. Daniel Jonas, DAYS): "What is really beautiful about being a dad is I get to expose my kid to all the little things I take for granted, and I get to see it through his eyes brand-new."

Daniel Cosgrove (Billy Lewis III, GL): "My kids are still young, and as they are getting older, I see them through different phases of life, from baby to toddler, reaching different goals. I know that everything I do and say they are absorbing. How that will manifest itself, I don't know. I have a huge impact on their life. This is a long-term investment, and I cherish every day of it, even when it is the most frustrating, hardest thing and you are, 'Oh, my goodness, I am going to go out of my mind.'"

Soap rivals frolic in waves
EMMERDALE babe Victoria Hawkins gets to grips with her new man as they frolic in the Spanish surf. Victoria, 25, couldn't hide her joy as she tussled with rival soap star Kevin Sacre on holiday in Majorca.

Kevin, 28, who plays HOLLYOAKS bad boy Jake Dean, playfully dunked the sexy actress into the sea after giving her a piggyback swim. The TV couple became an item after meeting at the British Soap Awards two months ago.

Victoria usually does the breaststroke as man-eater Sharon Lambert in the ITV1 sheep-and-sex saga. But Channel 4's Kevin will hope she's less shallow in real life.

Julianne Moore has new film out - Savage Grace
Moore, 47, got her earliest recognition for her role as Frannie Hughes on the soap opera AS THE WORLD TURNS, but it wasn't until her early 30s that she began to make a mark in film, most forcefully by playing a marital spat in Robert Altman's Short Cuts naked from the waist down. In her new film, Savage Grace, which opened Friday in limited release, Moore plays Barbara Baekeland, a onetime actress who married the heir to the Bakelite plastic fortune.

Soap veteran Ellen Wheeler follows a new script
Ellen Wheeler knows a thing or two about reinvention and survival.

In the 1980s, the Emmy-winning actress portrayed twins Marley and Vicky Love Hudson on the soap opera ANOTEHR WORLD. She moved to ALL MY CHILDREN as one of the first characters on TV with AIDS. In the late 1990s, she reprised her role as Marley Hudson on ANOTHER WORLD. Because she didn't resemble her on-camera twin, the writers decided that Wheeler's Marley would be crushed in a car wreck and then, while recovering, burned and disfigured in a horrible hospital fire.

Wheeler is still blazing soap opera trails.

Now working behind the camera, the 46-year-old executive producer of GUIDING LIGHT early this year ditched the format used since the 1950s to produce soaps: three large pedestal cameras to shoot scenes in a handful of studio sets. As part of her gutsy gambit, GUIDING LIGHT crews now use hand-held digital cameras to rove the three dozen small sets constructed within the hulking CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan and outdoors in nearby Peapack, N.J.

Wheeler is trying to create a more modern look to attract younger viewers -- and keep the show alive.

"This is all about making sure that soap operas stay vital," Wheeler says, sitting in a wooden pew in her sparse New York office, which has been converted into a set. "We just couldn't sit quietly and let ourselves slide away into the night."

Tweaked OLTL Tale Adds "Original" Jess
Michael Logan at TV Guide reports: What the Tuck? There's already a hitch in those fantastic One Life to Live 40th anniversary plans I revealed earlier this week. Fan fave Jessica Tuck, who was supposed to be seen in a Heaven sequence as her late, great character Megan, had to bow out of the gig yesterday due to a scheduling conflict. (Souces say the conflict is High School Musical 3, but I have no confirmation of that).

This is not just a big disappointment for us Tuck-anistas, it's a big headache for the show because her appearance was no mere cameo. OLTL head writer Ron Carlivati had wanted Megan to serve as a celestial guide for her mama Viki (Erika Slezak), who will visit the Great Beyond after dying in a car crash — a major two-day plot twist (airing July 21-22) that riffs on one of the soap's most famous stories from the 1980s.

The scenes shoot this coming Monday. The clock is ticking. What to do? Carlivati, who is quite the brain-stormer, quickly picked a different dead Megan to be Viki's guide — that would be Megan's namesake (and Viki's granddaughter), baby Megan, who died by miscarriage in 1999 when her mom, Jessica, was the victim of a hit-and-run.

Back then, Jessica was played by another fan sensation, the much-missed Erin Torpey — and that's who's gonna come back to the show and play baby Megan in Heaven! Granted, it's a little weird, but it's certainly a creative way to solve a casting crisis!

News Brief

The quite real Restless Style for women
Life doesn’t often imitate art when it comes to the daytime soaps, unless you have an evil twin who’s a closet serial killer. But in the case of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS art is very much imitating life these days.

Last month the CBS soap debuted an online fashion and lifestyle magazine, RestlessStyle.com, to tie in with the launch of a similarly named print magazine on the TV show. While the print publication is fake, the online one is very real. It includes beauty tips, of course, but also red carpet event coverage, videos, horoscopes and playlist downloads.

Web tie-ins are becoming almost a necessity to maintain the attention of an audience, younger women, whose favorite primetime shows all have an extensive internet presence.

CBS has INTURN, an online-only reality show that offers the winner a role on AS THE WORLD TURNS. AMC has web extras like a couple’s wedding video and wedding album. DAYS OF OUR LIVES has a blog by the show’s writers.

HOLLYOAKS actors return for wedding
HOLLYOAKS fans will be pleased to see some familiar faces returning to the Chester-based soap in the coming weeks. Long-time stars Sarah Dunn and Darren Jeffries return for the on-off marriage of Steph and Max.

Jeffries played OB for 10 years, and only quit the teen soap in February, when his character followed girlfriend Summer to London. Dunn left for pastures new in 2006 after playing blonde bombshell Mandy Richardson for more than a decade. Mandy fled when her marriage to Tony (Nick Pickard) broke down following their daughter Grace's death.

BLOG UPDATE: Lynn Liccardo
"Based on the handful of OLTL episodes I’ve seen this week, I do have a suggestion for the incoming GL writing team – and ATWT’s as well: longer scenes, long enough to let the emotions resonate with viewers. On yeah, one more thing for GL: maybe with FOUR headwriters, there will be enough manpower to write full episodes, instead of the half-assed music interludes that tell us nothing about character and do nothing to advance the story. Of course, since GL has no real story."

Amanda Seyfried 'embarrassed' by her stint on ATWT
"At times Amanda seems excessively self-critical – as borne out by the comments she makes about her first acting role, in the daytime soap AS THE WORLD TURNS [as Holden and Molly's daughter, Abigail]. Though most 15-year-olds would have been delighted to win a role on a widely watched soap opera, Amanda admits that she was in tears at her performance, 'because I knew it sucked. I was so embarrassed that I’d be on air and be a failure.' She remained on the show for 27 episodes, and then stopped: after that faltering start (and shaken by the events of 9/11), it took her another 18 months to return to acting [as Joni on ALL MY CHILDREN]."

Mark Sullivan returns to ATWT as Reg
Mark Sullivan returns to AS THE WORLD TURNS next week as Luke's friend, Reg Addington, President of Oakdale U's GLBT group. Reg shows an interest in the now-single Luke, much to Noah's chagrin. Sullivan previously appeared on the show back in February when his character invited Luke and Noah to a wild party at Tony's parent's lake house.

Picture yourself in rolling farmland, the hubbub of village gossip mingling with the bleating of lambs. Now imagine that instead of rainclouds over fields of wheat, a bright African sun blazes over sweet potato and cassava plants. And on top of discussing the latest harvest, the villagers also describe the best way to fit a condom.

Welcome to the African Ambridge. URUNANA, the ARCHER's style radio drama from Rwanda, is hotly tipped to win the One World Special Achievement Award for Development Media on 12 June.

Ten million Rwandans tune in to the latest instalment from the fictional village of Nyarurembo twice a week. The soap is complete with its own loveable rogue, love affairs and agricultural anecdotes.

Soap Watch: Haskell Comes Home to Llanview
On what enticed her to return: "I trusted Frank and I knew that Ron [Carlivati, head writer] was back in charge, and I quite like him. And I knew that he was aware of the character. That was one of the concerns about the previous head writer [Dena Higley]. She really didn’t seem to. But you know, I feel safe there and it’s not my first time around, so if I’ve got questions or ideas, we’ll all just figure them out together. But the amnesia part sounded good to me. They said I’d be working with Trevor [St. John] and Michael [Easton, John McBain] and that also sounded good to me."

On the length of her stay: "I have a certain time that we’ve agreed to, but it’s still a little flexible in the end. As far as story line, though, I really don’t know. I just know what it was coming back for and that was kind of interesting to me. The whole amnesia thing is kind of fun. I asked Frank when he was going to send me information on what Marty had been up to and he said, ''Oh, you don’t have to worry about that. She doesn’t remember.’' Okay! Great! You don’t even know how much help that was for me."

OLTL Celebrates No. 40 with Blasts from the Past
Michael Logan from TV Guide reports: Long before Passions came along, One Life to Live was daytime's wildest soap — especially back in the Reagan era, when Viki (Erika Slezak) had an out-of-body experience during brain surgery and wound up on a space ship to heaven. To celebrate the ABC soap's 40th anniversary next month, OLTL head writer Ron Carlivati will revisit that celestial 1987 plot by having Viki die — just momentarily, of course! — in a car crash.

"This time, heaven will be a very modern high-rise — Viki will go up the elevator floor by floor, encountering all sorts of dead characters along the way," said Carlivati. Among the former stars making angelic returns are Phil Carey (Asa), Mark Derwin (Ben), Stephen Markle (Mel) and Jessica Tuck (Megan). OLTL's legendary creator, Agnes Nixon, will also appear in heaven.

That's not all. Carlivati will redo the famous '80s plot where Tina (Andrea Evans) survived a plunge over the Iguazú Falls in Argentina, only this time, creepy Carlo (Thom Christopher) will force Tina to watch in horror as he sends her daughter Sarah (Justis Bolding) over a waterfall in Mendorra. Fan favorite John Loprieno will return as Tina's ex-hubby, Cord.

And remember the time Clint (Clint Ritchie) was knocked unconscious and time-traveled to the Wild West? Carlivati will riff on that plot, too. "Bo (Robert S. Woods) and Rex (John-Paul Lavoisier) are hit by lightning and wake up in 1968 — the same year OLTL hit the air," Carlivati says. The kicker: Bo has become his pop, Asa, and Rex has become the young Bo.

All three homages air July 21–22, but the Bo-Rex twist will play out for several weeks, maybe with dire consequences. Says Carlivati: "If they can't find their way back to the future, Rex will be drafted and sent to Vietnam."

AMC casts Petey Cortlandt
Soap Opera Digest is reporting newcomer Daniel Kennedy has landed the recurring role of Petey Cortlandt on AMC. Petey, the son of Opal and Palmer, will return on July 11. Mitchel Federan last played the part in 2002.

BLOG UPDATE: DAYS Headwriter Dena Higley
"I had a crappy week at work. I don’t know how else to describe it. For anyone who thinks I just make stuff up for DAYS and it’s perfectly realized on the TV screen, I’ve got a flash for you… I strike out more than I hit. So many times I’ll work out a story only to have it axed. It’s not that I think I’m always right. But sometimes the rejection and the sense of 'fighting City Hall' is just exhausting emotionally, physically and (worst of all) mentally."

EASTENDERS' summer of red hot plots
EASTENDERS bosses are apparently promising viewers a summer of red hot plots. The residents of Albert Square are going to be rocked by a series of dramas and romances, according to the Daily Star. A source told the paper: "Fans won't know what has hit them with these plots."

Max Branning - played by Jake Wood - apparently returns to Walford after daughter Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald) sends him a text pretending to be from his wife Tanya begging him to come home.

But when he arrives he finds Tanya (Jo Joyner) is happily in a relationship with his brother Jack (Scott Maslen). Max is furious and plots revenge, which could prove dangerous for Jack, who has managed to hide the real reason he left the police.

Meanwhile, pregnant Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons) is trying her best to avoid Sean Slater (Rob Kazinsky) but he follows her on her family holiday and makes it clear he wants to be there as the father of his baby. Roxy's sister Ronnie (Samantha Janus) is stunned when their father Archie (Larry Lamb) turns up.

And it seems Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) is set to find love again with Max Branning's saucy sister Suzy (Maggie O'Neill).

DVRs lifting network TV? Copy that
The growing popularity of digital video recorders is brightening the picture for network TV, which has been buffeted by steady erosion to cable.

Only 23% of TV homes owned a DVR in May, Nielsen says. But that's nearly double the 12.4% average for the 2006-07 season. And because DVR users watch more TV than others, their impact on ratings is magnified.

"People with DVRs have the capability of watching this stuff whenever they want," says ABC's Larry Hyams, adding that the most-recorded shows have ratings 40% higher in DVR homes.

Problem is, until recently, networks haven't profited from procrastinators. In a compromise, they can now charge advertisers for delayed viewership, but only within three days. DVR users also can more easily skip commercials.

GUIDING LIGHT writer reshuffle
Christopher Dunn, Lloyd "Lucky" Gold and Jill Lorie Hurst have been appointed Headwriters of broadcast history's longest running program, GUIDING LIGHT, as announced today by the show's Executive Producer Ellen Wheeler. Dunn, Gold and Lorie Hurst will join current Headwriter David Kreizman to create two new headwriting teams that will work together to bring their vision to the screen.

"I am thrilled about the new roles that David, Jill, Chris and Lucky will play on the headwriting teams at GUIDING LIGHT," said Wheeler. "Since GUIDING LIGHT adopted its revolutionary new production model at the start of the year, we have made major changes to nearly every aspect of how we produce the show. I believe that appointing collaborative headwriting teams will help to expand the show's vision and storytelling ability in this new model. Our new headwriting teams are made up of extraordinarily talented individuals who all respect the rich history of GUIDING LIGHT and are all very dedicated to mining that history for the future success of the show."

Kreizman joined GUIDING LIGHT in 1995 as a Production Intern and during his time with the show he has worked as a Production Coordinator, an Associate Producer and began writing scripts and breakdowns for the show in 1997. Kreizman became Headwriter in 2004. Kreizman lives in New Jersey with his wife Natasha, who he met working at GUIDING LIGHT, and their two children.

Dunn joined GUIDING LIGHT in 1999 and was Co-Headwriter from 2001 - 2002. He began his daytime career as a breakdown writer on Santa Barbara and has also worked on the writing teams of Sunset Beach and General Hospital. INTERIVEW: Eden Riegel is no Imaginary Bitch

"Everybody on ALL MY CHILDREN has been so supportive and they are watching [Imaginary Bitches], so that’s so great. We try to get Cameron (Mathison) and we’re still hoping to. We just know so many good actors, there just aren’t enough roles for them, so we’ll have to keep doing episodes so we can get them all in there."

FOX 411: P&G soaps ratings slide
"The ratings dropped once again last week for CBS’s AS THE WORLD TURNS without star Martha Byrne. Of course, there are some who think CBS and sponsor Procter & Gamble are simply trying to drain their audiences and cancel this show and GUIDING LIGHT. It would be a unique approach. The latter show continues its own ratings descent thanks to its piss-poor production values"

Stuntcasting a quick fix for ratings
ABC's UGLY BETTY cast Lindsay Lohan (ex-Alli, ANOTHER WORLD) as a former high school rival of the show's eponymous lead, played by America Ferrera.

"Lindsay was interested in doing TV," says series creator Silvio Horta. "I thought she'd be a great fit with the show. She appeared briefly in the finale this season in flashback, and then we'll see her in five episodes in season three starting in September."

But increased viewership alone isn't the only reason shows opt for the unanticipated guest star. Achieving verisimilitude was what brought former CBS newsman Dan Rather to ABC's DIRTY SEXY MONEY, according to Craig Wright, that show's creator.

"We needed a journalist, and the first person who came to mind was Dan Rather," Wright says. "He's deeply respected and trusted, yet he has a subversive corona, which is perfect for the show. We're actually having him back in the new season."

The casting of Rather and other non-entertainment luminaries -- such as investor Warren Buffett on ABC's longtime sudser ALL MY CHILDREN in March -- also testifies to the blurring of lines between the real world and fictional realms.
