We Love Soaps presents the 3rd Annual Indie Soap Awards on February 21 (tonight!). Winners will be presented with an original work of art handcrafted for We Love Soaps by the artist, Armando Ramirez. His all-metal sculptures are soldered together from recycled, salvaged auto parts, and each one is unique.
"At first, little by little, I began to craft figures from scraps and discarded mechanical parts–-mostly from cars and bicycles," describes Ramirez. "And so I began to create sculptures, soldering the pieces together and giving them shape as I imagined they should look.
"The process involves selecting recycled items that can be used. I separate them and soak them in a cleaning solution to remove any impurities. I solder them together until I achieve my design, then I give it a protective coat of glossy varnish."
The Indie Soap Awards statuette portrays a whimsical figure, crafted from a spark plug and various scraps left over from a die cutter. He bends over to peer through the lens of a camera fashioned from a dimmer-switch potentiometer, honing his craft using screws and nuts.
"We were looking for an original work that went with the postmodern, steel-and-polished-concrete aesthetic of the New World Stages complex, where the celebration and awards presentation ceremony will take place," explains Roger Newcomb, Founder of We Love Soaps, LLC--the presenter of the Indie Soap Awards.
"The Indie Soap community is so diverse, but one thing we all have in common is that we're resourceful and crafty--usually because we have to be!" Newcomb observed. "And what's more resourceful than cobbling together this adorable little man from the re-appropriated insides of various metal devices?"
Newcomb also enjoys the symbolism of a work built around a spark plug--a tiny device that ignites a complicated, powerful reaction--and "the doohickey that modulates the flow of power and light." 23 statuettes will be awarded during the presentation ceremony at 8:00 PM on February 21, 2012, the centerpiece of the multi-part celebration including a red carpet, press walk, winners' circle and open bar.
At over 6" tall and weighing in at almost a pound, the substantial award is easy to grip, fun to pose with and mantle-ready. The work of Armando Ramirez appears via special arrangement with Novica, part of the National Geographic organization.
