NEWS: Being ‘Wicked’ Suits Kim Zimmer; GLEE Season 5 Cast; Oliver Mellor Quits CORRIE

Former GUIDING LIGHT star Kim Zimmer in "Wicked"
Being ‘Wicked’ suits famed actress Kim Zimmer
In Madame Morrible’s big, frizzy, upswept wig and voluminous Ozian costume, Kim Zimmer disappears so deep in her character in “Wicked” that she walks out the stage door, and fans who watched her for decades as Reva Shayne, the primary romantic lead on GUIDING LIGHT, don’t recognize her.

“I walk right past people who make no comment,” Zimmer said by telephone from a coffee shop in Columbus, Ohio, where “Wicked” stopped before beginning a five-week run at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music. “The night after they see the show, I find people waiting who say, ‘I loved you as Reva on the GUIDING LIGHT. I didn’t know it was you until I got home and read the program. When I realized who you were, I had to come back to get your autograph.’”

“Soaps did not fold because the audience became tired of them,” Zimmer said. “They just became too costly."

1899: Actor Santos Ortega was born.  He would become best known to soap fans for his two decade run as Will "Grandpa" Hughes in AS THE WORLD TURNS.  He passed away on April 10, 1976.

1952: Popular (NBC and later) CBS radio soap opera THE GUIDING LIGHT, on the air since 1937, made its television debut on CBS-TV. The original television cast included Theo Goetz, Jone Allison, Lyle Sudrow, Charita Bauer and Helen Wagner. In the episode, Meta lamented to her sister Trudy that she had left her husband Joe and her step-daughter Kathy hated her. Trudy convinced Meta to talk to Joe on the telephone.

The Irna Phillips-created show continued to be broadcast on the radio as well until 1956. In 2009, after more than 72 years on radio and TV, GUIDING LIGHT finally went off the air. The show remains the longest running scripted series in broadcast history.

1966: ANOTHER WORLD was broadcast live on the East Coast (as usual at that time) but someone forgot to tape the episode for airing in the West so the cast had to do the show again. In the episode, Hope Bauer (Elissa Leeds) asked Lee (Gaye Huston) if she could stay with Hope and Mike (Gary Pillar) all the time. ANOTHER WORLD transitioned from live to pre-taped broadcasts with the May 24, 1967 episode.

In this week's episode, "Setting the Table," Zoila gets irritated when Valentina tries to get closer to Remi; Spence accuses Peri of cheating; Carmen takes advantage of Alejando and Odessa being out of the house; and Marisol tries to figure out a way to spend more time at the Powell house.

NEWS: David Hasselhoff Comic; Katherine Kelly Lang; Paula Garces Pregnant; DOWNTON ABBEY on Amazon; EAST LOS HIGH

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS alum David Hasselhoff Gets His Own Comic, Launches It In London Next Weekend
Of late, David Hasselhoff has been spied sporting a comic book style T-Shirt with The Hoff emblazoned across his what-used-to-be-a-historical-rippling-chest-and-six-pack.

Turns out it’s not just a T-Shirt. It’s a strip from Retro Comics, launching this weekend (though copies wont actially be available yet) and then spinning into an official The Hoff comic book.

Katherine Kelly Lang likes THE MENTALIST and THE VOICE
"I like THE MENTALIST; it is such a regular network TV show formula, but I still love it because I love him (star Simon Baker). That’s the one I seem to catch the most, then I really enjoy watching THE VOICE. I love the judges. And that’s pretty much what I watch ... besides THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL."

EAST LOS HIGH is Spanish soap opera meets American high school teen drama
Directed by Carlos Portugal, EAST LOS HIGH is exclusively available to Hulu Plus subscribers.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Key Part of DOMA, Dismisses Prop. 8 Case (Soap Stars React)

The gay rights movement saw a significant victory at the Supreme Court on Wednesday. In a 5-4 ruling in United States v. Windsor, the court struck down a provision of the 17-year-old Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that denies federal benefits -- like Social Security benefits or the ability to file joint tax returns -- to same-sex couples legally married.

"DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the majority. Kennedy was joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

Gay married couples (including my husband and me) will now receive federal benefits.

At the same time, the court ruled 5-4 that the defendants in the case of Hollingsworth v. Perry, which considered the constitutionality of California's same-sex marriage ban (called Proposition 8), have no standing in court. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, joined by Justices Antonin Scalia, Ginsburg, Breyer and Kagan. Gay couples in California will now be able to get married.

Soap opera stars immediately took to Twitter to post their reaction (so far all in support of the decisions):

Greg Rikaart ‏(@gregrikaart):
Not getting married anytime soon, but celebrating #equality tonight nonetheless.

NEWS: Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, Erika Slezak, Eric Winter, Michael E. Knight, Natalie Zea & Travis Schuldt

Jacqueline MacInnes Wood's next THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL appearances: July 11 & 12
"Wouldn't you like to know?" teases Scott Clifton (Liam), when asked where his storyline with Steffy was heading now that her portrayer, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, is technically off-contract with the show. "Let me be clear — she's not gone," he clarifies. "She'll be around. If you talk to her, she'll tell you she has no intention of, like, never showing up again. She's going to be coming back."

ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Erika Slezak dishes on her Philly roots, says Viki will stay busy
Slezak had a rebellious streak during her time at the now-defunct Sacred Heart at Eden Hall in the Northeast.

"My best friends used to convince the teachers that we needed to go to the library in Torresdale to study," Slezak told me. "We would spend 20 minutes there and then we would go to the Mayfair Diner. We would eat hamburgers because the school's food would leave something to be desired."

Today Is National HIV Testing Day

Today, in a statement, the President highlighted the importance of HIV testing:
"Today is National HIV Testing Day, when we encourage people across the United States to get tested. Early detection and treatment for HIV saves lives, and yet over half of adults in the United States have never been tested. Nearly one in five people living with HIV in this country doesn’t know his or her status. That delays treatment, increases the risk of transmission, and sets us back in our fight against the epidemic.

Getting an HIV test is easier and faster than ever. And this past April, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended that everyone between the ages of 15 and 65 get screened for HIV as part of their routine health care. That means, under the Affordable Care Act, new health care plans will be required to cover HIV testing without any additional out-of-pocket costs.

But more Americans still need to decide to take the test. We know from experience here at home and around the world that HIV testing opens the door to treatment, reduces the spread of the virus, and helps people lead longer, healthier lives. That’s why, on a trip to Africa in 2006, Michelle and I were tested for HIV – because there should be no shame or stigma associated with knowing your status. And if we each do our part by getting tested – and encourage our friends and family to do the same – then we will move closer to an AIDS-free generation."
As the President pointed out, getting tested is about taking action – so take the time and get tested.

FLASHBACK: Agnes Nixon is the Doyenne of Daytime (1983)

Doyenne of Daytime
Agnes Nixon launches her first new soap in 13 years

By Richard Stengel; Reported by Peter Ainslie
TIME Magazine
August 15, 1983

The tribulations in this academic community go far beyond publish or perish. There is the oh-so-smooth college president who is scheming to become a political bigwig. There is the cuckolded football coach whose wanton wife is exchanging signals with the star quarterback. There is the ogreish dean who keeps his pristine daughter locked away in his gothic manse. Meanwhile, no one seems to be paying much attention to books, lectures, homework or grades. That is because Alden University exists only in a mythical grove called Soapland and in the mind of a woman who creates worlds that flicker on the mental screens of millions.

That woman is Agnes Nixon, 55, the acknowleged doyenne of daytime drama, the wizard of such ongoing washboard weepers as ONE LIFE TO LIVE, SEARCH FOR TOMORROW, ALL MY CHILDREN, ANOTHER WORLD, AS THE WORLD TURNS and THE GUIDING LIGHT, each of which she either created or once served as head writer. And now there is the freshly minted college town of Corinth, the setting for LOVING, ABC's first new soap opera in eight years and Nixon's first new soap in 13.

TELENOVELA WATCH: DAMA Y OBRERO and COMANDO ELITE Premiere Tonight

A pair of telenovelas premiere tonight. On Telemundo, DAMA Y OBRERO takes over the 8 p.m. ET slot. A Miami-produced adaptation of a 2012 Chilean telenovela of the same name, it stars José Luis Reséndez, Ana Layevska and Fabián Ríos – a bit of sameness in the trio as all actors who have worked together before – Layevska and Reséndez in LA MADRASTRA, Layevska and Ríos in EL FANTASMA DE ELENA and MI CORAZÓN INSISTE, Reséndez and Ríos in last year’s CORAZÓN VALIENTE, but never all in the same project. In any event, it should be gratifying to finally see Ana Layevska, a delightfully inventive actress, once again in a leading role after watching her steal her previous three telenovelas at the network playing two antagonists and a supporting role.
