NEWS ROUNDUP: Gary & Val on DALLAS? Jennifer Landon's Heather Debuts. No Drastic Changes For THE ARCHERS. Erik Valdez Joins GH!

Joan Van Ark On Whether We’ll Be Seeing Valene On DALLAS
"I’m having lunch with Ted Shackelford tomorrow. They asked him to come down and be part of it. It was several months ago, and he’s deeply into filming THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, the daytime soap for CBS. But if they asked Gary, maybe they’ll ask [for Val]."

What would Valene be up to now? "First of all, I think she’d be the most successful. She was always the put upon, goody two shoes. I’d like to have her running a movie studio out here in Hollywood. I’d love her to do a 180 from what they ever expected."

Y&R's Heather is a changed woman, Jennifer Landon debuts today
Given Heather's middle class background, "she's got some scrappiness about her," Jennifer said. The actress, who won three back-to-back Emmys® for the role of Gwen on As the World Turns, hopes to show Heather's vulnerability, but also a little more sassiness and savvy than we might have seen previously. Jennifer reports she felt "totally upside down" in the beginning, having seen and heard about two different versions of the character, but "I'm trying to make my way and find her," she said.

“I personally never thought that Dallas would resurrect itself because I didn't think anybody knew how to do it,” Duffy said. “And it was proven to me on the few attempts that were made. The movie that was going to be done, I read that script, it was atrocious. It was just awful. And I just didn't think anybody understood it anymore. So I thought, ‘Well, they might talk about it but it's never going to happen.’”

Are Turkish soap operas responsible for a suicide epidemic in Iraqi Kurdistan?
Locals say the phenomenon started when satellite TV was introduced and soap operas like FORBIDDEN ROMANCE, in which wealthy and independent women navigate the Istanbul dating scene, became popular. According to this article, the shows gave the area’s girls a taste of what life could be like if they weren’t living in a patriarchal, closed society that is notoriously unkind to women.

Acting editor of THE ARCHERS moves to reassure fans after fears it will become more like Eastenders
In a blog on THE ARCHERS website, John Yorke moved to ease concerns. “The Archers has been in my family for three generations. It's as perfect as long running drama gets; why would I want to change a hair?,” he wrote. “Apart from anything else my Mum would probably kill me.”

He added: “The comment that was picked up was very clearly a specific reference to one storyline - the intimidation of Ruth and David (Archer). Ironically, this story was planned long before I joined the show.

“It is dark but in the very best traditions of a program not scared to kill its leading lady in a barn fire, and it fits snugly I hope alongside everything Ambridge does best.”

The producer concluded: “Joe's ferrets, Lynda's hay-fever and cliffhangers built on whether Clarrie will finish her jubilee cake in time; all will remain and I hope live for as long as THE ARCHERS draws breath.”
