B&B star Katherine Kelly Lang on her Daytime Emmy nomination
As for what may have clinched the nomination for her, Lang reflects, "It's hard to figure that out. You're always trying to think of which scenes to submit to be viewed, and that's always difficult for me. I actually dread that process.

"I like the more subtle scenes, but maybe the ones they're looking for are more dramatic or really out there. I always think they look funny out of context, so I don't like to submit those."

"I'm going for a little bit of a different look this year," said Egan, who is wearing a dress from BCBG.

NEWS: Is "Spoiler Alert" Overused? Plus, Daniel Coonan, Julia Pace Mitchell, PLL's Social Media Success

Spoiler Alert: Phrase Is Overused
A graph from the “Chronicle” tool — created by my colleague Alexis Lloyd to track use of words and phrases in The Times — shows the history of the phrase “spoiler alert.”

This colloquial, even cutesy, phrase became popular some years back in online discussions of movies, books and TV, as a courtesy to alert a reader if a plot twist was about to be revealed. But as the graph suggests, we’ve become infatuated with it in the last few years, and we’re on track for a record this year. The expression has spread far beyond its original purpose, and now often seems like an all-purpose plea for attention: Hey! I’m about to tell you something interesting! In most cases it does nothing to actually alert the reader, since the “spoiler” is often the very next phrase.

Daniel Coonan joins EASTENDERS
New EASTENDERS arrival Carl White (Daniel Coonan) will waste no time in threatening an Albert Square resident next week.

Carl is the ex-boyfriend of Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing) and a former cellmate of the late Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman).

He has come to Albert Square in search of Derek's missing £10,000, which he feels belongs to him.

It does not take Carl long to discover that Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) stole the cash in order to set up his new restaurant.

He then sets off to find Ian to explain to him the error of his ways.

The scenes will air on BBC One and RTÉ One on Thursday June 20.

Y&R's Julia Pace Mitchell welcomes son, Stephen L. Hightower III
“Being new parents has brought us closer together, it’s all about teamwork,” Pace Mitchell tells PEOPLE. “Little Stephen is awesome. Being a mom is the greatest role I will ever play.”

The true sign of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS success is in social media
The spring finale, which ended on a cliffhanger when the girls found something in a car trunk, was the first episode of a TV series to generate more than 1 million tweets in the hour it was broadcast, according to SocialGuide, which analyzes Twitter conversations related to television programs.

That kind of interactivity has helped make PRETTY LITTLE LIARS ABC Family's most-popular series ever (3.8 million viewers during its spring run), up 39% compared with the previous spring (and up 43% in its core audience of females ages 12-34).

In social-media activity involving that young female demographic, PLL trails only THE WALKING DEAD for the season. For the first quarter of 2013, it helped ABC Family attract the largest number of unique social-media users of any entertainment cable network. (Season to season, however, the network is down 6% in viewers and 9% in the target audience of young women.)

NEWS: Why More TV Shows Should Kill Their Characters; Plus, THE TALK Post-Emmy Show, William Roache, Lindsey McKeon, Susan Lucci, Jane Krakowski

THE TALK to Air Post-Emmy Celebration Episode
A rep for the CBS talk show tells TV Guide Magazine that the five hosts will be joined live in-studio on Monday, June 17 (2pm/1c/1p) by some of the biggest winners from the previous night's 40 annual Daytime Emmy Awards. The guest roster at this "after party" will not be limited to CBS winners.

William Roache's next court date is September 2
The actor, who plays Ken Barlow in CORONATION STREET, last week faced new charges of five indecent assaults involving four girls aged from 12 to 16. He denies all the charges. He was bailed to appear at Preston Crown Court again on September 2 with a 13 January provisional trial date set. An ITV spokesman previously confirmed Mr Roache would not be appearing in the soap until legal proceedings had concluded.

NEWS: The Queen Is An EASTENDERS FAN; WALKING DEAD Actress Arrested for Sending Ricin Letters to Obama; Double Life of Jason Thompson

WALKING DEAD Actress Shannon Rogers Guess Richardson Arrested for Sending Ricin Letters to Obama
The arrest of Shannon Rogers Guess Richardson, 35, comes two weeks after Richardson contacted the FBI claiming that her husband, Nathan Richardson, had sent the letters last month to Obama, Bloomberg and Mark Glaze, head of a gun-control organization co-founded by Bloomberg.

Richardson, according to a federal criminal complaint, is charged with mailing a threatening communication to the the president. An arrest affidavit says Richardson mailed the letters on May 20. She made an initial court appearance in Texas Friday afternoon. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.

PRISM of Interest: How TV Drama Anticipated the Data-Mining News
The revelations this week about the extent to which the government national-security apparatus has been data-mining phone records and Internet communications may have come as a complete shock. It may, if you’d seen the reporting on surveillance and data-mining under the PATRIOT Act since after 9/11, may have been less of a surprise, whether or not you’d guessed at the extent.

NEWS: BOARDWALK EMPIRE Premieres September 8; More Charges For William Roache; Plus, Matthew Morrison, Prospect Park, James Wolk, Tammin Sursok

Fourth season of BOARDWALK EMPIRE will premiere Sunday, September 8
Jeffrey Wright and Ron Livingston are among the new castmembers for the Prohibition-era mob drama.

GLEE's Matthew Morrison opens up about broken engagement to DAYS OF OUR LIVES actress Chrishell Stause
“When I was 27, I proposed to my then girlfriend, but I didn’t do it for the right reasons. We’d been going out for a year or so and I felt under pressure from society. I was thinking, ‘This is the age when I should probably start having kids so this is what I should do…’ But after I did it (proposed), I immediately felt in my heart it wasn’t right. My instant thought was ‘What did you just do?’”

Morrison later ended the engagement and admits it was an awful experience, but he learned a lot.

Did Susan Lucci Dodge a Bullet? Revived Soaps in Disarray
It seems in retrospect that when Prospect Park announced the cut back to two episodes per week rather than four of each, the company knew it was running out of money. Now they’ve doubled how long their backlog of episodes will last. So it had nothing to do with their “viewer survey.” It was simply about stockpiling episodes.

NEWS: ABC Desperately Seeking Katie Couric Replacement; Plus, Joanna Johnson, Kay Alden, Heather Tom, Lee Phillip Bell, Brenda Greenberg

Sources: ABC desperately seeking Katie Couric replacement
“It’s an unmitigated disaster,” one seasoned studio executive said. “One of the biggest failures ever in syndication. Terrible ratings, no growth, shouldn’t be on the air. Where did it miss the mark? Let’s start with her, she is dreadfully boring. The show offers nothing new to the audience, nothing to say.”

In January, Disney-ABC Domestic Television officially renewed Couric’s syndicated talk show, which airs in stations spanning more than 95 percent of the country, for a second season through fall 2013. A source closely connected to Couric insisted that the news woman is working closely with ABC and is still very much wanted by the network. But as it stands, we’re told it is almost a certainty there will be no season three.

Lee Phillip Bell will make another cameo on THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
Mrs. Bell will next appear on the show July 23.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL's Joanna Johnson Dishes The Fosters and Her "Gayest Year Ever"
"There are so many interesting issues that come up in this series (THE FOSTERS), and Stef and Lena being a same-sex couple isn't a big one because the series is set in California where gay adoption is increasingly common. But in many other states this is an issue, because gay couples or single gay people are not allowed to adopt or foster, and that's a real shame. There are a lot of wonderful families willing and wanting to get into the program but the law in some places just won't allow it."

"Yes! I do feel bad [about abandoning THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL], even though [B&B exec producer] Brad Bell always knew that was the deal. My writing-producing always comes first. But it does look like I'll be going back to B&B pretty soon. Brad and I are talking about my returning for a really fun story in July when The Fosters has wrapped for the season. I really do miss B&B — both the people and the news. I went to the GLAAD awards a while back with Crystal Chappell [Dani] and Linsey Godfrey [Caroline] and found out that Karen's daughter has turned into a total badass crazy person since the last time I was on the show. I couldn't believe it! [Laughs] Clearly, I need to come back. That girl needs some mothering!"

Binge-Viewing Gives Composers New Headaches
With shifting viewing habits and binge-viewing erasing the traditional pacing of episodes, some composers are forced to take an unusually long-view approach to their work, as the distinctions between scoring for film and scoring for TV become fewer by the week.

BREAKING BAD Creator Vince Gilligan on Why Binge-Watching Saved His Show
No matter how addictive the show may be, you can’t get people hooked on something they won’t sample, and getting viewers to try a new show isn’t easy. Luckily, in the case of Breaking Bad it came along at a time when TV fans were just becoming accustomed to all-you-can-eat viewing thanks to services like Netflix, iTunes and – later – Amazon Instant. It was those services that, according to BREAKING BAD creator Vince Gilligan, allowed fans to catch up on his acclaimed AMC show and join it in later seasons.

NEWS: Erika Slezak On MAD MEN's Megan Draper; Plus, Brooke Newton, Jen Lilley, Thaao Penghlis, Alison Sweeney, Tonya Pinkins

ONE LIFE TO LIVE Star Erika Slezak on What Life Is Like for Megan Draper
"My advice is: Don’t marry somebody in advertising. You know, it helps to have a spouse who understands what you do, and who is either a part of the world or just understands it and is very nonchalant about it, I guess. I’m married to an actor, so he gets it. I don’t think my husband ever watched love scenes, because he didn’t have to, he didn’t particularly want to. But he understands what it is."

NEWS: Binge Watching, Shawn Christian, Alley Mills, James Lipton, Melissa Leo, Peter Parros, Tika Sumpter, Antonio Sabato Jr., Jeanne Cooper Deleted Scene

From ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT to DR. WHO, Binge Watching Is Changing Our Culture
Grant McCracken writes: "Why do we binge watch? One way to answer this question is to say, well, we binge on TV for the same reason we binge on food. For a sense of security, creature comfort, to make the world go away. And these psychological factors are no doubt apt."

"I believe we binge on TV to craft time and space, and to fashion an immersive near-world with special properties. We enter a world that is, for all its narrative complexity, a place of sudden continuity. We may have made the world “go away” for psychological purposes, but here, for anthropological ones, we have built another in its place. The second screen in some ways becomes our second home."

Former GUIDING LIGHT actor James Lipton (who also wrote for many daytime soaps) talks about being a pimp in Paris in the 1950s
"I was. It was only a few years after the war. Paris was different then, still poor. Men couldn’t get jobs and, in the male chauvinist Paris of that time, the women couldn’t get work at all. It was perfectly respectable for them to go into le milieu."

"[I represented] a whole bordello. I represented them all, but her especially. I did a roaring business, and I was able to live for a year. The French mecs didn’t exploit women. They represented them, like agents. And they took a cut. That’s how I lived. I was going through my rites of passage, no question about it. It was a great year of my life."

DAYS OF OUR LIVES star Shawn Christian busy with three other projects
No less than three projects consume his waking, non-“Daniel” hours: Spanners, a sci-fi, film noir “loooow budget” thriller, in which he produces and acts as an 8,000-year-old immortal with a “deep-dish monotone” voice; ADDICTS ANONYMOUS, a half-hour, single camera comedy for which Christian and his cohorts (including DAYS actor Freddie Smith) are seeking funding through kickstarter.com; and Carolina Blues, a movie he’s writing, loosely based on Sierra Lantz, the Kent City teen stock car driver who races her pink four-cylinder at Berlin Raceway and other venues. Christian is one of Lantz’s proudest racing sponsors.

NEWS: Few Breakout TV Hits in 2012-2013, Eva Longoria Earns Master's Degree

The 2012–13 TV Season in One Really Depressing Chart
The 2012–13 television season officially passed into the Nielsen history books Wednesday night, bringing to an end what will likely be remembered as one of the worst years ever in the history of network TV (assuming, of course, that anyone still remembers what "television" is in 50 years). There were hardly any new breakout hits (though THE FOLLOWING, REVOLUTION, and ELEMENTARY did okay). And, as has been widely reported, the Big Four as a whole bled viewers: They collectively lost about 10 percent of their adults-under-50 audience this season, with none of the major broadcasters growing year to year in the key demo. But as bad as things look on the macro level, the devastation is even more evident — and jaw-dropping — when you dig into the numbers for all the returning shows.

11 Winners And Losers Of The TV Season
1. Losers: All the Networks
2. Winner: CBS
3. Losers: Most New Shows
4. Winner: Shonda Rhimes

GLEE star Lea Michele writes a book
The Emmy-nominated actress, 26, has signed a deal with Harmony Books to write her first book, titled "Brunette Ambition," which will be a part memoir, part how-to and part style guide. It's due out next spring.

NASHVILLE: In Defense of Hayden Panettiere's Juliette Barnes
Given the unflattering (but surely fun to act) plotlines, Hayden Panettiere also wins the Michael Emerson prize for “Humanizing Terrible Characters on Network TV”: not only does she make such ridiculous antics seem completely authentic and natural to her character, she also renders Juliette … likable.

Eva Longoria earns master's degree
Longoria spent the last three years working on a master's degree in Chicano and Chicana Studies from CSUN. She graduated on Wednesday.

Colombian soap opera actor beaten for portraying TV tough-guy villain
Actor Mauricio Bastidas, who appeared as villain Pedro Venildo Caseres on RCN's ‘Tres Milagros’ was beaten on the street by angry viewers who confused him for the bad guy he played.

Are EASTENDERS, CORRIE, EMMERDALE and HOLLYOAKS making the UK fat and lazy?
Soap opera chiefs have slammed suggestions that their shows promote unhealthy lifestyles and poor diets, saying their programs "aim to reflect modern life" and comply with Ofcom guidelines.

Their remarks come following the publication of a two-week study by Liverpool John Moores University Business School that looked at more than 830 scenes from our most popular continuing dramas and found that 72 per cent of the food consumed, or referred to, was unhealthy and that exercise was only shown or mentioned on four occasions.

The report cited long-serving EMMERDALE character Eric Pollard (Christopher Chittell) as being Britain’s unhealthiest, with 62 per cent of his scenes said to feature him drinking during the daytime in the Woolpack, or at home, with a glass of red wine. According to findings, 79 per cent of all food-related scenes on EMMERDALE feature unhealthy eating – news that might come as a surprise to loyal viewers who frequently see Nikhil Sharma (Rik Makarem) fretting over his exercise regime.

An official spokesperson for ITV said: “EMMERDALE and CORONATION STREET aim to reflect modern life. Both programs comply with the regulations set down by broadcaster regulator Ofcom.”

She had the power to make everyone feel so special."

NEWS: Joshua Morrow, Jimmy Deshler, Fall Season Stereotypes, 666 Returns In June

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS' Joshua Morrow Talks About Nick's Shocking Daddy Issues
"By making it clear that, in Nick's heart, he didn't do anything wrong. He was so distraught about the death of his daughter Cassie that when the paternity test for Summer came back corrupted and inconclusive — something he shared with no one — he just couldn't bear the thought of losing Summer, too. He refused to do another test. He was that sure she was his, and that much in denial. He's lived with it for so long it became the truth."

GENERAL HOSPITAL's Jimmy Deshler on his favorite places in America
"My favorite place to visit in the U.S. is…is Key Largo, FL. This is a vacation I take every year and it is one of those vacations that is truly just relaxing and taking in the sun. It’s just me, the hammock, and the sun. Oh, and of course, a little bit of fishing and snorkeling too."

NASHVILLE NEWS: Chris Carmack Talks Will & Gunnar; Hayden Panettiere; Production Incentives; Renewal Chances

Chris Carmack Q&A: What's Next for Will and Gunnar on NASHVILLE?
On Will's sexualty: "I think we can all grow our own conclusion as a viewer but from Will’s perspective, I think he’s still very unclear and he’s very conflicted and he’s repressing a lot. He’s shoving a lot down and I don’t think it’s as simple for Will as black and white. It’s going to play out and I want to take that journey with the writers, as well."

ABC's NASHVILLE to pay dividends for decades, film professor says
"It gives Nashville a new cache, refreshes it and shows a different side of Nashville, making Nashville a celebrity itself again with a new broader audience," Billy Pittard, department chair for electronic media communication at Middle Tennessee State University, said. "It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to completely measure the impact, but this is going to pay off for decades because now it's on people's minds."

NEWS: Susan Flannery, Katherine Kelly Lang, Arianne Zucker, Peter Bergman, Doug Davidson, Jeff Branson

Susan Flannery Dishes Her Emmy Nomination and Life After THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
"I think it's much more wonderful that they finally nominated Katherine [Kelly Lang]. I'm always the first to gripe about it when it doesn't happen."

On whether she misses B&B and actring: "Nope. I really only think about that part of my life when somebody calls me. I don't mean to be unkind or anything. I had a great run and a wonderful time, but there's a time to go. And when you go it's over. You don't look back."

Katherine Kelly Lang Celebrates Her First Emmy Nomination
"I'm not the type to analyze or speculate. It was my choice to switch to the supporting category because [in 2012] that's what I was. Brooke didn't really have a story of her own. She was busy supporting her daughter, doing a lot of mom stuff, and of course supporting Stephanie as she was dying. We'll see how it all turns out. I'm just so satisfied being nominated."

DAYS OF OUR LIVES star Arianne Zucker Celebrates Second Emmy Nom
"I'm not sure if it has sunk in yet," shares Arianne Zucker (Nicole, DAYS) on her second nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress. "I woke up to a call from an NBC rep telling me about the nomination. I told my daughter [3], 'Izzy, Mommy got nominated for an Emmy,' but she’s still to young to understand what it means!" Meanwhile, due to a busy work shooting schedule in Salem, Zucker didn't get a chance to talk to her Vegas-based husband Kyle Lowder (ex-Brady, DAYS, ex-Rick, BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL) until after 1 in the afternoon.

Bradley Bell & Scott Clifton Speak Out On Emmys
THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL earned its Outstanding Drama Series nomination with Stephanie Forrester's celebration of life and her good-bye party. "I just thought they were really touching and unique," says headwriter and executive producer Bradley Bell. "And Susan [Flannery, ex-Stephanie] was stellar, as always. Everyone in the room was amazing."

"I feel like the competition is a little harder in this category and it means more to me to be recognized as a supportive actor," Clifton says. "In the medium we're in, it is an ensemble cast, and there's nothing more important than being recognized as being supportive of other actors. That's really special."

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Emmy reactions
Peter Bergman (Jack) received his Lead Actor nod for the episode where Jack had a confrontation with Billy and then checked himself into the hospital for surgery. "Like everyone else, I had two or three great scenes followed by some run of the mill scenes. Nature of the beast. That's the way it is."

Castmate Doug Davidson (Paul) joins Bergman in the same category for the episode where Paul turns himself into Heather for shooting Ricky. "It's a difficult process to match what we do in daytime with the criteria of the contest," he admits.

Jeff Branson (ex-Ronan) was nominated for Supporting Actor for Ronan got drunk and broke up with Phyllis, and has every intention of attending the ceremony. "I love this genre," he declares. "I love that show, I love these people. I would never not be there for something like that."

Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea) now has a Y&R nod for Supporting Actress to add to the three she earned while playing Annie on ALL MY CHILDREN for the episode where Chelsea argues with Adam over his hiding Sharon in the cottage. "I really loved those scenes," she confides. "Michael [Muhney, Adam] was really great in them as well. It seemed real and raw."

Controversial Soap Opera In Colombia Focuses On Paramilitaries
The soap opera is called THREE CAINS, an allusion to the Biblical story of Cain slaying his brother Abel, in part because Vicente Castano had his brother Carlos murdered in 2004.

A grassroots campaign against the show, which runs on Mundo Fox cable channel in the United States and RCN in Colombia, also has raised questions about a whole genre of Colombian TV series that focuses on the country's top drug traffickers. Some say such shows glorify killers while minimizing victims.

Online Scripted Shows Are Targeting Female Viewers
WIGS, YouTube's popular women's channel, marks its first anniversary with the premiere Friday of the second season of LAUREN, a powerful drama about rape in the military starring Troian Bellisario, Jennifer Beals, Bradley Whitford and Raymond Cruz.

Founded by filmmakers Jon Avnet (Fried Green Tomatoes) and Rodrigo Garcia (Alfred Nobbs), WIGS has consistently delivered some of the most engaging programs online.

Avnet, whose TV work includes the innovative cop show BOOMTOWN, began talking to Garcia about online video five years ago.

"I felt intuitively that a lot of the stuff that was on the Web was (made) for young males," Avnet said in a joint phone interview with Rodrigo. "But we quickly found out that the most rapidly growing demographic online was women and that they are still underserved."

Crackle Plots 2 Made-for-Digital Movies: Sequel to ‘Joe Dirt,’ Martial Arts Action Film
Crackle, available on more than a dozen different platforms spanning TV and mobile, offered 20 hours of original programming last year. It will double up this year, hosting 80 original episodes and the two features.

Other new shows include THE CLEANERS, a six-episode crime series starring Emmanuelle Chriqui, Gina Gershon, David Arquette and Missi Pyle; the music documentary series PLAY IT FORWARD, produced by Robert Downey Jr.; STRAND STREET, directed and produced by Milo Ventimiglia, and second seasons for THE BANNEN WAY and CHOSEN.

Nielsen’s New Digital Test Has Big TV Chasing Elusive Viewers
Nielsen and a coterie of TV networks – A+E, ABC, AOL, CBS, The CW, Discovery Communications, FOX, NBC and Univision – have agreed to take part in a pilot for what Nielsen calls its digital program ratings that will tabulate overnight data for unique audience, stream counts and reach by age and gender for TV programming viewed online.

The test does not take into account people who watch TV via mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets – meaning that no matter how successful the idea is, it will not capture a viewer behavior that is on the rise and growing.

ALL MY CHILDREN, ONE LIFE TO LIVE Return 2 Years After Cancellation — Online
Naturally television executives are trying to downplay the potential threat to their industry. While conceding that we are experiencing "an evolution of the viewing mechanism," Sony Pictures Television senior executive programming vice president Steve Kent insisted to Variety that "people have long predicted the demise of network television, but it still exists and will for the foreseeable future."

According to Greg Meng, one of the executive producers for DAYS OF OUR LIVES (which is produced by Sony Pictures Television), while network insiders had nothing but the best wishes for this project, they were confident that "these shows won't be competitive with us."
