In launching the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in 1961, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, "wished to encourage a new form of artistic expression, in the service of peace and understanding for mankind".
Monaco's international status ideally suited the Prince's ambition: to recognize television as an exceptional means of bringing cultures together and enhancing their respective knowledge. This project immediately generated worldwide interest and over the years, many distinguished celebrities have sat on the successive juries, bringing international recognition to the best of television programming. In 1988, H.S.H. Crown Prince Albert II was named President of the Festival.
The year's critics and audience awards were given out this weekend and U.S. shows fared very well. Here are the American winners:
Critics TV Choice Awards
Best Comedy: MODERN FAMILY
Best Drama: MAD MEN
Best Drama Actor: Jon Hamm
(Tracy Morgan won for Best Comedy Actor but he did not attend).

Telenovela/Soap Opera: THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
The 6th Annual TV Audience Awards will honor the programs that gathered the highest number of viewers worldwide in 2010 across five continents. The nominees were pre-selected among the 15 best-performing foreign fiction programs in 67 countries.
Winning this award every year, with an estimated 35 million daily viewers in over 100 countries, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL remains the most watched soap opera in the world, in its genre.
B&B's Heather Tom (pictured) and Patrick Duffy were among the many celebrities in attendance.
