News Brief

TV Guide Canada's weekly "Nelson Ratings"
Nelson Branco looks back on the Daytime Emmy awards and provides his ratings of actors, actresses and moments to watch this week.

In the Press Room with TV Guide at the Emmys
"Outstanding Younger Actress and Actor winners Jennifer Landon and Tom Pelphrey also came through, each with a unique perspective on the night as Daytime expats. Neither says they're ruling anything out yet — neither returning to a soap (any soap) nor touching a soap script again — but neither specified more Daytime appearances in the works. For his part, the newly shorn Pelphrey was riotously funny, cracking jokes even about his recently deceased father — albeit in a loving way. 'He was Big D--k,' Pelphrey deadpanned. 'Because his name was Richard.' He added, 'The apple sure doesn't fall far from the tree!,' sending the room into peals of laughter. Once he stopped laughing at his own jokes, the GUIDING LIGHT alum said that, as a new Angeleno, he's auditioning around town, but no plans just yet."

"But the best moment of the night? Bryan Datillo running up on stage when GH won Best Drama Series. Why not, right? Sure, DAYS didn't win anything - but at least they've got a sense of humor about it. LOVE that cast, and I LOVE their attitude. It's all in good fun."

BLOG UPDATE: Gabby Winkel
"[The Emmys] seemed a repeat of last year's and I always like some surprises in the winners. I'm always rooting for the surprise winner, the underdog. So in that respect, I was disappointed until the divine Jeanne Cooper won. She seemed genuinely surprised and the audience just delighted for her."

From Broadway to Extra to Real Estate Michael Corbett on Larry King tonight
Michael Corbett's career has taken many unique twists and turns, all of which began with him appearing on Broadway (or Broadway bound) in shows like "Nefertiti," "Matinee Kids" and "Come Back, Little Sheba." On Monday night, June 23rd on CNN, his many worlds will collide when he appears as the featured guest on Larry King Live (check local listings for times) to discuss both his career, and his new best selling book - "Ready, Set, Sold!: The Insider Secrets to Sell Your House Fast--for Top Dollar!"

Since his start in theatre, Corbett has been a household name to television viewers for nearly twenty years, starring as "Daytime’s Most Lovable Cad" (People) on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. Currently he is the real estate, home and lifestyle host of TV’s #1 news magazine Extra. He is also the host and senior supervising producer of Extra’s Mansions and Millionaires, the hour-long weekend series which takes viewers on a sneak peak of the extraordinary mansions, yachts, and hobbies of the rich and famous, and is watched by 17.5 million viewers a week.

EASTENDERS burial was 'offensive'
An EASTENDERS storyline which involved a live burial has been ruled "offensive" by the media watchdog. Ofcom received 116 complaints from viewers who thought the scenes, featuring character Max Branning, were "unsuitable" for the time of broadcast. The BBC said the storyline, aired in March, was crafted in a "responsible manner" and took into account any pre-watershed audience "sensitivity". But Ofcom has ruled that the BBC was in breach of its decency rules.

Jack Scalia's girlfriend embroiled in legal battle
Wealthy Reno businessman Warren Trepp, who is embroiled in a legal battle with a former employee over software purportedly used in the war on terrorism, now faces a new, more formidable opponent: a billionaire businesswoman who hired Dennis Montgomery to work on software she allegedly marketed to the federal government.

Edra Blixseth, co-founder of the Yellowstone Club resort in Montana frequented by the mega-rich, famous and politically powerful -- including Bill Gates and Greg LeMond -- is paying Montgomery $100,000 per month to produce software for her company and has lobbied her connections in Washington, D.C., trying to secure millions in defense contracts, former Montgomery lawyer Michael Flynn said in court filings.

Blixseth, who owns a $200-million-plus home near Palm Springs and whose recent divorce from her self-made-billionaire husband, Tim, has been in the news, is known as much for her extravagant travels, parties and celebrity golf tournaments as for her shelter for abused women, her friendship with U.S. Rep. Mary Bono Mack and her romance with former ALL MY CHILDREN actor Jack Scalia.
