Guiding Light to Get Hands On in Miami

On Saturday, 18 Miami-Dade schools will be getting a mini-makeover -- for free.

The thousands of volunteers who will weed, mulch, plant and paint at the schools will be taking part in the 13th annual Hands On Miami Day, a countywide blitz of community service.

The event, which raises money through registration fees and corporate sponsorships, is the largest fundraiser and single day of service for Hands On Miami, which organizes about 90 free volunteer projects a month.

There are seven environmental projects include planting seedlings on Virginia Key, removing exotic plants at Miami Beach's North Shore Open Space Park and doing general beach cleanup on the spoil islands off Coconut Grove.

For the first time this year, volunteers were able to pick their projects online when registering for the event.

One project has been full since February: landscaping and painting murals at Miami Park Elementary, 2225 NW 103rd St., where three cast members of the CBS daytime show "Guiding Light" will be joining volunteers as part of the drama's 70th anniversary celebration.

The project also has 150 of the show's fans on a waiting list.
