ATWT & GL Coming to China

Power Corporation has made a deal with the Metan Development Group to distribute AS THE WORLD TURNS and GUIDING LIGHT in China.

Metan Development Group has firmed up a deal with Power for the exclusive distribution rights in China for the popular daytime soap operas GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS.

Metan will be the exclusive representative in China for 130 episodes of each series, both produced by TeleNext Media for Procter & Gamble Productions. MIPCOM marks the first time the shows will be available for China.

Metan’s president, CEO and founding partner, Larry Namer, said, “GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS, two of the most successful TV programs ever produced in the U.S., have captured the hearts of North American audiences for decades. We’re delighted to be the first to introduce these award-winning programs to audiences in China. We feel strongly that the series’ compelling story lines, relatable characters and program quality will have great appeal to audiences in China.”

Power’s VP of Asia and the Middle East, George Sakkalli, commented, “China's vast television and new media market has great potential. Metan's unique approach and commitment will ensure that Power's content reaches many millions of Chinese viewers. I am delighted that Power has been able to introduce these much loved soaps to China.”

Brian T. Cahill, the senior VP, managing director for TeleNext Media, added, “For a combined 123 years, GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS have been the gold standard of contemporary serial entertainment. We proudly support the partnership between Power and Metan that will make this perennially engaging entertainment available to the Chinese audience for the first time.”

  1. Hmm? How far back will they go to pick episodes for the Chinese market?

Why would the Chinese want to watch old American soaps when they can watch new Chinese or Korean soaps?

  3. Telenext made a deal with Power two years ago to distribute ATWT and GL internationally. If Power can get the shows into China, more "power" to them. I just wish ATWT and GL could have developed an international presence (like B&B) years ago.

  4. Me too, Roger. ATWT has been on the air here for 20 years (RTL4 celebrated their 20th anniversary on Friday). It's kinda weird to think that it was the only country besides the US and Canada where the show aired for years. Although I think they've tried the show in Italy where it was canceled. Just like how the #1 show in the US, Y&R, was canceled here.

  5. I'm wondering how far back in time these 130 episodes of both shows are going? Thanks!
