International GL and ATWT

Nearly two years ago it was announced that Power Corp. had picked up the worldwide distribution rights to GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS.

Announcing the deal, Justin Bodle, the founder and CEO of Power, said: “This is the first time that global audiences will be able to enjoy the trials and the tribulations of two of the biggest U.S. daytime dramas in the history of TV. Daytime drama remains a truly dynamic genre, which continues to command significant audiences on the international screen across all dayparts with their feisty story lines and plots. Power is delighted to have acquired the rights to two original masters of the genre, which together represent a modern day slice of American TV at its best.”

Power is Europe's number one independent producer and distributor of high quality, award-winning series, mini-series and movies for television.

So whatever happened with that? Power tells me the shows have been sold in a number of countries.

  1. I wonder what this means for ATWT in the Netherlands. Is RTL, the Dutch broadcaster, now paying Power for the rights?

  2. Mark, I know ATWT is playing in the Netherlands and GL has played in Italy for a long time, but I'm not clear on how those deals were made. Do you know how ATWT gets distributed in the Netherlands? Did RTL buy the rights to the show from P&G or through a third party distributor? I'm assuming whatever arrangement was made for that is completely separate from the other countries Power is trying to sell the shows to.

  3. I think they bought the rights from P&G. RTL mentions P&G in the end credits (see the end of this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hGM2_pRAFA ). I'll send an e-mail to RTL. See if I can get the answer. :-)
