Today in Soap Opera History (June 17)

On this date in...

1932: CBS Radio soap opera JUDY AND JANE aired for the final time.  It was picked up and continued in October by NBC Radio.  After it was finally canceled from radio in 1935, it continued to be distributed through transcription for 12 more years.

1950: HAWKINS FALLS debuted on NBC airing on Saturday nights as more of a comedy at first. The show later turned into a five days a week soap opera.

1966: On THE GUIDING LIGHT, Bill Bauer was caught drinking by a colleague.

1987: Robert Clary aired for the final time on DAYS OF OUR LIVES as Robert LeClair.

1987: On SANTA BARBARA, Cruz and 'Eleanor' made a discovery.



1988: Joseph Hardy's last day as executive producer of RYAN'S HOPE. Felicia Minei Behr took over until the show ended its run the following January.

1994: Sarah Hardy, who played Jill Malone on YOUNG DOCTOR MALONE, Lyddy Benson on FROM THESE ROOTS and Jean Sawyer on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, died at age 57.

2009: Hal Riddle, who played Max on DAYS OF OUR LIVES in the early 1970s, died at age 91.
