Julia Barr Teams With Give Kids A Smile (press release)

Emmy Award-winning actress Julia Barr has signed on as the celebrity spokesperson for New Jersey’s Give Kids a Smile! (GKAS) campaign and will be featured in television, radio and internet public service announcements that will run in January and February 2012.  Julia’s husband, oral surgeon and participating Delta Dental dentist, Dr. Richard Hirschlag, is a volunteer dentist on Give Kids a Smile! day -- February 12, 2012 -- at his office in Dayton, NJ.

“I am so happy to be a part of this important program that makes a difference for children in New Jersey. I am proud of the work my husband does to help serve the mission of the campaign, and I was honored when the NJ Dental Association asked me to tape these PSAs and get involved.  I hope it elevates even more awareness for the cause,” Julia explains.

The Give Kids a Smile! PSA is underwritten by New Jersey Dental Association partner Delta Dental of New Jersey.  Julia’s PSA will be made available in digital format to be shared on websites and social media pages of participating GKAS locations (more at http://www.njda.org/GKAS). It will also appear at www.deltadentalnj.com and www.youtube.com/deltadentalofnj beginning February 3, 2012.

According to Cavan Brunsden, DMD, NJ Statewide Chairman of Give Kids a Smile!, “Asking Julia to get involved was an easy decision to make.  She is well known, a NJ resident, her husband is an important and respected part of our program and she cares deeply for our cause, and Julia is an exceptionally generous and gracious celebrity who really gets behind things she believes in.  We are thrilled to have her on board.”

Julia Barr has starred on television, film and the stage but is best known for her role playing Brooke English for over 30 years on the ABC daytime drama All My Children.  She garnered eight Emmy Award nominations and won the trophy for her portrayal in 1990 and 1998.
Throughout her career, Julia has dedicated herself to many causes important to her.  She was a hands-on volunteer in direct care for New Jersey’s Save The Animal Rescue Team II; was a spokesperson for The Fund for Animals for five years; and is currently working with Born Free USA helping to promote their Fur Free Fashion and Keep Wildlife in the Wild campaigns.  She also spent several years as a volunteer for The Coalition for the Homeless.

The Give Kids a Smile! program is the culmination of the efforts of several organizations under the direction of the New Jersey Dental Association. Each February, the dental community, both public and private sectors, comes together to ensure the delivery of care to thousands of underprivileged children who otherwise may not be able to afford or access care. Volunteers work to ensure the program is fun and educational and that it gives many children a great first impression of visits to the dentists.  Services rendered include oral hygiene instruction, screenings, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, fluoride treatments, stainless steel crowns, and more. All procedures on Give Kids a Smile! day are free.  http://www.njda.org/GKAS.
