News Round-up: BETTY, Peter Simon, Kim Ulrich

UGLY BETTY finale spoiler
Betty makes out with someone, and his name is neither Matt nor Henry.

GUIDING LIGHT PROJECT: On STAR Trek and Soap Fandom
Lana M. Nieves writes: "The recasting of Roger Thorpe was not only a failure, it was a bit of a disgrace...and insult to GUIDING LIGHT's loyal fans. They never should have let Zaslow go, and they certainly never should have even considered continuing any Roger Thorpe story line once Zaslow was no longer around to fill the role. Casting Zach Quinto as Spock isn't as bad, but it's pretty bad."

Peter Simon back to GL
According to KFSM.com, Peter Simon has joined the growing list of former cast members returning to GUIDING LIGHT this summer.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: PASSIONS' Kim Ulrich
Two of Cal State Stanislaus' famed alumni made trip home this week to inform and inspire a new crop of Hollywood hopefuls. Television actress, Kim Johnston Ulrich, and her husband, Robert Ulrich, a casting company owner and director provided industry advice and an inside look into what it takes to make it in show business to a group of theatre students, faculty and staff on Monday.

"It will happen. You have to have a plan. We want students thinking about the road ahead of them," Kim said.

  1. About Michael Zaslow (Roger Thorpe, GL, David Rinaldi, OLTL). He was a brilliant actor. When unable to speak, GL disgraceful treatment of him was an opportunity for OLTL, where he reprised his role as Dorian's (Robin Strasser) ex husband. There he showed his amazing ability to rise about the ALS that eventually claimed his life. In a wheel chair, with only a machine to speak his typed out words, her often conveyed more with the arch of an eyebrow than less actors hope for when they chew the scenery. With former OLTL actress Brynn Thayer (ex Jenny), he came up with the concept of Zaz's Angels. OLTL raised money for the cause and I was happy to attend one at Yankee Stadium where OLTL played AMC. Michael was a brave man who faced adversity by investing his energies in finding a cure. When Michael could no longer fulfill his role on OLTL, his request was not to kill his charactor off. OLTL honored this and as far as anyone knows, David Renaldi is still alive in Switzerland. I am proud of the circle of friends at OLTL who allowed Michael to practice his craft in his last days. The loyalty of Brynn and Robin, the producers and writers, stands in stark contrast with that of GL. Whether they knew of his illness or not, once they did know, they did not rectify their error nor did they show respect to him for the many years he lent his talent and generated ratings and money to their show.

  2. While I completely agree that only Michael Zaslow could play Roger Thorpe, I have to say that Lana's rather whiny comments about how the new Star Trek was an affront to her really only served to piss me off; certainly it didn't put me on her side.

JJ Abrams came up with a very innovative way to revitalize the franchise and all Lana does is cry that nobody could replace the original cast. Did she WATCH the movie?!? Did she not get the rather broad hint that the original Trek "storyline" is still alive and well? It's not disappointing as much as it's downright pathetic.
