EASTENDERS Named Best Soap at British Soap Awards

The EASTENDERS cast had plenty to celebrate at this year's British Soap Awards after picking up seven trophies, including the coveted best soap gong.

The show's matriarch Barbara Windsor was called to the stage to collect a lifetime achievement award which took her by surprise.

Fourteen years ago they gave me the chance to re-invent myself, and for that I shall be eternally grateful. Next year I'll be celebrating 60 years in the business. It's a job I absolutely adore and I get paid for it – isn't it wonderful!

CORONATION STREET's Katherine Kelly was named best actress, with the show's Craig Gazey recognized with the best newcomer prize. DOCTORS won best storyline, for Vivien March's rape, with the actress who played her, Anita Carey, winning the dramatic performance prize.

HOLLYOAKS left the show empty-handed after winning eight awards last year.

The ceremony will be broadcast on Wednesday 18 May on ITV
