News Round-up

On Soaps, Suicide Is Rarely Painless (Even for ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Todd)

Marlena De Lacroix has written an excellen column on soaps and suicide. She writes: "Whether it be major or minor characters, suicide is not a topic that should be taken lightly on soaps. Especially now, when soap writers are desperate for ratings, and the only thing they think guarantees a bump in the ratings is a stunt that shocks the audience."

She also asks the question: "Do soap writers give a damn about social responsibility anymore?"

Genie Francis: A return to GENERAL HOSPITAL?
According to Terry Morrow of the Knoxville News Sentinel, she hasn't been asked, and is filling her dance card with other things. Her new Hallmark Channel movie, The Note II: Taking A Chance On Love airs Jan. 31. She's also interested in working with Marc Cherry from DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and is not ruling out the idea of jumping ship to another soap, like CBS's THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL.

Morrow goes on to report: "Genie came to the hotel last night, where we had drinks and discussed the future. Among her feelings about returning to GH: 'I don't think the writers are interested in a mature Laura,' Francis says of her character, who was in a coma for a while and now is out and about. She believes GH likes reminding viewers of who Laura used to be -- 20 years ago when she was a free-spirited girl, not who she is now: a woman in her 40s with 3 kids and an ex-husband.

Meanwhile, I floated out the idea to Francis of her doing ABC's DANCING WITH THE STARS. She laughed and said she was not a good dancer. The prospect scares her, but, by the end of the evening, she was considering it more seriously."

INTERVIEW: GUIDING LIGHT's Kim Brockington (Felicia)
:I like the dynamics of human relationships, and Ellen (Wheeler, executive producer) is exploring that in all these storylines, so I'm really excited. I'm interested to see what will happen. We don't know. We go with the flow and see what occurs."

Tammin Sursok in Spectacular!

The sparks fly when Nikko joins a musical group called Spectacular! led by preppy Courtney (Tammin Sursok, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS) and mentored by the absent-minded Mr. Romano (Greg Germann).

Next stop for Amanda Donohoe: EMMERDALE's Woolpack
"Have the producers of EMMERDALE lost their minds? They have already crashed a plane, exploded several cars and a farm, and burnt down a barn, a factory and a church. But inviting Amanda Donohoe to play a powerful wife and mother who buys up half the village? Now that’s dangerous."
