NEWS ROUNDUP: Joan Van Ark, Thorsten Kaye, John McCook, A Martinez, Kyle MacLachlan

Joan Van Ark on her return to DALLAS: 'I felt a huge responsibility to do Valene justice'
"Ted [Shackelford] called me after we had done our scene that first day and he was so dear. He said, 'You still got it. You were great every take.' Ted is brutally honest – and that’s a good thing because I want the truth. So for him to say that meant so much to me."

"And with Charlene [Tilton] – she’s such a pistol! When I see her now, I feel like she’s the parent and I’m the child because she’s got it going on! [Laughs] She calls it like she sees it, and she was so generous and beautiful to me when we were together. And Patrick Duffy and I had a really nice moment [off the set]. It was totally special, and it had to do with Larry [Hagman]. I shared something with Patrick and he returned it right back. It was maybe the most profound, connected moment I had when I was down there."

Valene will not be seen at J.R.'s funeral on next week's episode of DALLAS.

Thorsten Kaye on taping the first scene of the new ALL MY CHILDREN
"Jill Larson (Opal) was supposed to be in the first scene with this guy Peter [Cortlandt, Opal’s son]. Something happened and she wasn’t ready. I was just f—king around at the catering table stuffing bagels in my pocket. All of a sudden, someone comes up to me and says, 'Can you be ready in three minutes?' I said, 'Sure. I’ve got three bagels in a baggie and some bacon, I’m good.' The scene was a [one-way] phone call. When I was done, they said, 'Congratulations, you just finished the first scene of the new ALL MY CHILDREN!' That hadn’t occurred to me. I was just there to work. But it’s kind of cool that I was in the last scene on TV and I taped the first scene on the web."

[SPOILER ALERT]

On the show being set in the future with no Kendall: "Someone says, 'I’m sorry about you and Kendall.' That makes me want to watch: 'What happened? Where is she?' I think people will want to tune in to see how we tell the story. In theater, you often know the end of the play but you still go to see how the actors tell the story. In soaps, you don’t know the ending which is cool in its own way. 'Hey, you and Kendall aren’t together and your wife may be with someone else.' That informs every scene I do. I care about where we left these people. 'Where are they now?' The writers aren’t ignoring past relationships. I’ll jump on that train."

Jesse Metcalfe says TNT happy with DALLAS ratings
"I think, obviously, it makes for a better headline to say the show is slumping, but we don’t see it that way," says Metcalfe. "It's about dollars and cents at the end of the day. We get reports from Steve Koonin (president of Turner Entertainment Networks) and from Michael Wright (TNT's president, programming). The show is doing what they needed it to do in these winter months in the time slot that they have chosen. It’s consistently delivering over 1 million viewers in their key demographic."

GAME OF THRONES and the Hold Steady team for season 3 song
Producers have enlisted Brooklyn group the Hold Steady to bring to life a tune from George R.R. Martin’s fantasy saga. The band will perform “The Bear and the Maiden Fair,” with lyrics by Martin (below) and music by the show’s composer Ramin Djawadi. Last year, The National recorded Martin’s ominous “The Rains of Castemere” for season two, while “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” is more like a boisterous tavern song.
