The Otalia fansite, "Big Purple Dreams," has now reached 5,000 members. I just checked the official Telenext message boards for GUIDING LIGHT, AS THE WORLD TURNS and the ANOTHER WORLD revival, and it has only 3,776 members total.
I know those who run our favorite daytime programs sometimes like to dismiss soap fans on the internet as being a statistically insignificant but vocal crowd. But they are wrong, at least about the insignificant part. Everyone has internet access now and when this many passionate fans come together in less than six months for any reason it is NEWS.
Special kudos to this fan base for being the most positive group of fans I have ever seen in my lifetime.

There are 5,000 households in the national people meter sample. A separate sample of approximately 20,000 households participate in local metered samples; and different samples, including more than one million homes, fill out paper diaries for one week each year.

ReplyDeleteRoger...you are certainly fast on getting the word out! I've never been part of any fandom before, and I think I definitely held out for the best. The BPD is all about love and respect and the members are intelligent and witty. They say that you only see the real strength of people when their backs are against the wall, and the BPD members showed their strength in numbers in the fight to save Otalia and Guiding Light. The Otalia storyline will live long in my memory and so too will the Big Purple Dreams board. Destini, Mel, Christi etc had an image of how they wanted the board to be, and I hope that they are all proud of what they have achieved, and also maintained.
ReplyDeleteThats a big number WOW! Interesting that with all those people, Guiding Light didn't make the list of the most shows watched online--Y&R was the soap on the list. Wouldn't the power of the fans and the board reflect in that if the registered members were all active?

Whatever happens to Guiding Light -- Ellen Wheeler, Jill Lorie Hurst, Jessica Leccia and Crystal Chappell will go down in the annals of soap history for creating the first real, honest to goodness, full same sex love story on television. Good story brings in fans -- of the 5000 people at BPD almost all are either new to soaps, or long lapsed viewers. What love has brought together no network can put asunder.

But we are not going anywhere, in fact, we want more members, who are as passionate about GL and Otalia, as we are, and want to be a part of this wonderful fandom. Congratulations to Big Purple Dreams. Who knew in a little over 5 months time, that's less time then it took Jessica Leccia to have her baby, the BPD community would grow to 5,000? actually many of us expected it as we knew how dynamic and engaging the story of Otalia is along with the fantastic actors, writers, producers and directors. But this moment is about BPD and how a wonderfully positive, fun and inviting community has grown. I think most shows wish they could recruit us to support them. Congrats to each and eveyone of us who are keeping real. props to all.
