Today in Soap Opera History (October 8)
― Norman Cousins
"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.
On this date in...
1968: On The Doctors, Congressman Jason Randall (M. Emmet Walsh) arrived at Hope Memorial for a hospital tour with a posse of reporters, flustering Nurse Simpson (Carolee Campbell).
1969: On Dark Shadows, Count Andreas Petofi (David Selby), in Quentin's body, informed Angelique she had to follow his orders in the future. Julia (Grayson Hall) realized that Petofi (Thayer David) was really Quentin but then disappeared back to 1969.
1972: On The Doctors, Toni Ferra Powers (Anna Stuart) reunited with her mother, Barbara, for the first time since she was 12 years old.
1973: On Another World, Alice Matthews Frame (Jacqueline Courtney) admitted to her ex, Steve Frame (George Reinholt), she knew he had been with Rachel on the day Alice lost her baby.
Note: Read the complete Steve-Alice-Rachel story here.
1979: On As the World Turns, Lt. Lewis arrived from Oakdale to question Bennett Hadley (Doug Higgins) in his investigation into the attacks on Grant Colman (James Douglas).
1980: On Another World, Jordan Scott (J. Kenneth Campbell) and Blaine Ewing looked at Willis and Gwen's old suite at the Bayview Towers. After Blaine learned that Amy Halloway (Deborah Hobart) had a suite on the same floor, she and Jordan decided to take the suite. Felice Carpenter made her final appearance as Laura Esterman in this episode.
Thanks to Jennifer for sending in the clip above.
1982: On Dallas, Ray Krebbs (Steve Kanaly) told his wife, Donna Culver Krebbs, that he decided to send money to his Aunt Lil, who was caring for his ill "father" Amos.
1983: Joan Hackett, who played Gail Prentiss in Young Doctor Malone, died at age 49.
1984: Ryan's Hope began airing at Noon ET on ABC, swapping time slots with Loving, which moved to 12:30 p.m. ET. It was an unpopular move with fans (and some actors) who felt ABC was favoring Loving, the newest creation from Agnes Nixon. The ratings for Ryan's Hope would suffer, and ABC canceled the soap four years later. The final episode of the show aired on January 13, 1989.
1984: ABC's merchandising department licensed a series of posters and stickers featuring six the network's hunky daytime soap stars: General Hospital's Steve Bond and Brian Patrick Clarke; All My Children's Michael E. Knight and Laurence Lau; Ryan's Hope's Grant Show; and One Life to Live's Robert S. Woods.
1985: On Days of our Lives, Abe Carver (James Reyolds) found out McBride was the bad cop.
1985: On Santa Barbara, Dylan Hartley (Page Moseley) swam to shore and met Julia Wainwright (Nancy Lee Grahn). Later, Julia found Dylan sleeping in her car.
1990: On All My Children, Billy Clyde Tuggle (Matthew Cowles) showed Dixie Martin (Cady McClain) the wedding dress he bought for her.
1996: William Prince, who starred as Dr. Jerry Malone in Young Doctor Malone and played Ken Baxter as part of the original cast of Another World, died at age 83.
1999: On The Bold and the Beautiful, Eric (John McCook) was thrilled then Taylor (Hunter Tylo) told him one of her twins was named Stephanie.
2008: All My Children actress Eileen Herlie passed away at age 88. She was nominated for three Emmy Awards for her work as Myrtle Fargate on the soap.
2010: On One Life to Live, Viki Buchanan (Erika Slezak) told Echo DiSavoy (Kim Zimmer) to leave town.
