'Anacostia' Creator Anthony Anderson on Adding Elizabeth Hubbard to the Cast: "It's Going to Knock People's Socks Off"

Anacostia's Anthony Anderson, Marion Akpan and Melan Perez.
I spent Friday and Saturday at the inaugural Brooklyn Web Fest that was held at the Made in NY Media Center by IFP in DUMBO. Co-founders Noah Ash, Amanda D'Aquila and Kit Williamson created a fantastic event for content creators which included screenings, classes and panels. I was honored to be on the board for the event, and to appear on the "Building Social Communities" and "Be your own damn publicist!" panels. BKWF ended on Saturday evening with an awards ceremony and cocktail reception. Anacostia, a multiple Indie Series Award winner and now a Daytime Emmy winner, was named Best Ensemble. I was able to speak with creator and star Anthony Anderson, along with cast members Marion Akpan and Melan Perez about the show, and what's ahead.

The Anacostia team was especially excited about the upcoming addition of Emmy winner Elizabeth Hubbard (Lucinda on As the World Turns, Althea on The Doctors) to the cast. Her former As the World Turns daughter, Martha Byrne (who played Lily Walsh Snyder), made her directorial debut in Hubbard's scenes, which will air later this fall.

"When the fans and viewers see the show, they are going to be so surprised at the character she is doing," Anderson said.

Anderson raved about working with the daytime legend.

"It was amazing," he said. "It was a dream come true. When I pulled up, she was outside blocking herself, a true sign of a legend. To hear her speak those lines that Martha and I created was amazing. It's going to knock people's sock's off."

"I loved her as Lucinda," Akpan added. "She's dynamic, and she's going to do new things in Anacostia. We're coming back with a vengeance!"

Watch our interview below, which was shot outside Brooklyn Web Fest, just in front of the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge.
