1988: General Hospital's Grant tried to kidnap Robin.
1993: NBC aired the final episode of Santa Barbara.

On this date in...

1953: On Love of Life, Van (Peggy McCay) and Meg (Jean McBride) were at odds over Meg's son, Beanie (Dennis Parnell). Meg later asked Van, "How can you go on being friends with a man who threatened my life?" McCay left Love of Life in 1955 after 4 years. She currently stars as Caroline Brady on Days of our Lives.

1980: On As the World Turns, Sheila (Martha Lambert) was brought into the police station for drunken driving. Tom (Tom Tammi) found out this was not the first time she had faced such a charge.

1980: On The Edge of Night, Margo (Ann Williams) told Eliot (Lee Godart) she would give him a divorce when hell froze over.

1981: On Guiding Light, Mike (Don Stewart) was convinced a mysterious birth certificate was the reason behind Jennifer's (Geraldine Court) willingness to stay in prison for a crime she didn't commit. When Mike visited Jennifer in prison, she told him the birth certificate belonged to her sister.

1981: Primetime drama Hill Street Blues premiered on NBC.

1983: Actor Shepperd Strudwick, whose soap roles included Jim Matthews on Another World, Timothy McCauley on Love of Life and Victor Lord on One Life to Live, died at age 75. He earned two Emmy nominations for his acting work in daytime in 1976 and 1980.

1988: On General Hospital, Grant Putnam (Brian Patrick Clarke) was about to leave with Robin (Kimberly McCullough) when Anna (Finola Hughes) arrived at home.

1992: On The Young and the Restless, Neil (Kristoff St. John) apologized to Drucilla (Victoria Rowell) for being on her case about modeling.

1993: NBC aired the final episode of daytime soap opera Santa Barbara. Originally created by Bridget and Jerome Dobson in 1984, the show's final executive producer was Paul Rauch with Pam Long serving as head writer.

2000: Actress Fran Ryan died ate age 83. She played Rosie Carlson in Days of our Lives from 1976 to 1979. Her other soap roles included Sister Agatha in General Hospital and Dr. Helen Randall in Return to Peyton Place.

2001: On As the World Turns, Cindy Harrison (Kim Rhodes, playing her Another World character) met with Carly (Maura West) in an attempt to buy Craig's stolen microchip.

2005: Actress Ruth Warrick died at age 88. She brilliantly played Phoebe Tyler Wallingford in All My Children for 35 years. Her other soap roles included Hannah Cord in Peyton Place, Janet Johnson in The Guiding Light, and Edith Hughes in As the World Turns. Watch her Archive For American Television interview here.

2003: On Dawson's Creek, Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith) and his boyfriend, David (Greg Rikaart) decided to take their relationship to the next level, so they went together to get tested for HIV.

2008: Sabine Singh last aired as Greenlee Smythe on All My Children. Rebecca Budig returned to the role on January 16. ABC created an promo that announced "the real Greenlee returns to All My Children" and began airing it while Singh was still in the role.
