Today in Soap Opera History (August 22)

1986: Y&R aired the "It's OK To Say No" concert which
featured guest star Michael McDonald and Genoa City's Danny,
Traci, Lauren, Amy and Nathan.

On this date in...

1955: On The Brighter Day, Lydia's (Murial Williams) romantic life suffered as she became more stressed over her desire to confess that she had taken the silver clock.

1960: On As the World Turns, Doug (Nat Polen) explained to Penny (Rosemary Prinz) that he couldn't keep Jeff at the hospital against his will.



1967: On Dark Shadows, Victoria (Alexandra Moltke) accepted Burke's (Anthony George) marriage proposal.

1980: On The Edge of Night, an emotional Raven (Sharon Gabet) asked her mother why she didn't love her.



1985: Roger Aaron Brown aired for the final time as Danny Grant in Days of our Lives.

1986: On The Young and the Restless, Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian) and Lauren Fenmore (Tracey Bregman) took center stage to rock the house at Genoa City's "It's OK to Say No" benefit concert, which also featured performances by Traci Abbott Carlton (Beth Maitland), Amy Lewis (Stephanie E. Williams), Nathan Hastings and guest star Michael McDonald.



That summer's teen story on Y&R revolved around two pregnant teenagers--Molly Stark (Amy O'Neill), who was befriended my Cricket (Lauralee Bell), and Molly's roommate Nina Webster (Tricia Cast)--and how they became mixed up with the evil Rose DeVille (Darlene Conley).  The concert was part of the show's continuing storyline on the prevention of teen pregnancy. As Danny and Traci sang "Be Good Be True," Molly's reconciled backstage with her mother, Beverly Stark (Lynn Benisch).

1986: On Days of our Lives, Marlena (Deidre Hall) and Roman (Drake Hogestyn) renewed their wedding vows. Tamara (Marilyn McCoo) sang their song, "Up Where We Belong," during the ceremony.



"Up Where We Belong" was sung at Roman and Marlena's first wedding in 1984 by Doug (Bill Hayes), when  Wayne Northrop was in his first run as the original Roman. Josh Taylor played their friend Chris Kositchek, one of Roman's groomsmen in the ceremony. Eventually Hogestyn was revealed to be John Black when Northrup returned as Roman.  Northrop left the show again then returned later as a totally different character, Alex North. Taylor left DAYS and returned a decade later in 1997 as the new Roman.

1986: On General Hospital, when the bank discovered that almost $40,000 was missing from Duke's (Ian Buchanan) account, Felicia (Kristina Wagner) became the prime suspect. Frisco (Jack Wagner) and Felicia rode off on a motorcycle on the run trying to decipher the Tumble Dry computer code.



1997: On Another World, a drugged Shane (Robert Kelker-Kelly) made love to Lila (Lisa Peluso) thinking she was Vicky.

1997: On All My Children, Skye (Carrie Genzel) begged Edmund (John Callahan) not to give up on life after he told her that if Maria had died, he did too.



2001: On The Bold and the Beautiful, Sally (Darlene Conley) told Thorne (Winsor Harmon) that he and Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) killed Macy and nothing he could do or say would change that. Meanwhile, Brooke told Taylor (Hunter Tylo) she would never go away until she got Ridge back, and suggested that Taylor end her marriage to Ridge now.

2012: On Days of our Lives, Tad (Brendan Michael Coughlin) asked Sonny (Freddie Smith) what he did to turn Will (Chandler Massey) gay. When Sonny asked him what he was so afraid of, Tad punched him in the face.

  1. That's Lauren singing with Danny, not Traci. Lauren's name even appears in the credits at the end of the video.

That's why the lead sentence says, "On The Young and the Restless, Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian) and Lauren Fenmore (Tracey Bregman) took center stage to rock the house at Genoa City's "It's OK to Say No" benefit concert." The other concert performers who appeared in this special episode are mentioned for historical purposes, but are not seen in this particular clip.

  2. Two thoughts on the 1986 "Days Of Our Lives" clip:
    1. Marilyn McCoo has a gorgeous voice!
    2. It looks like a craft store exploded on Deidre Hall's head.
