"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1968: On DARK SHADOWS, Victoria Winters (Alexandra Moltke) and her prison guard (Howard Honig) struggled over a gun and she was shot in the shoulder.  Peter Bradford (Roger Davis) and Victoria attempted to leave the jail.

1979: On ANOTHER WORLD, Alice Matthews Frame Frame Gordon (Susan Harney) was indifferent when Dan Shearer (Brian Murray) talked about their wedding plans.

1980: On THE EDGE OF NIGHT, April was plagued by mysterious dreams.

1982: On DALLAS, Bobby Ewing's (Patrick Duffy) worst fears were realized when Jeff Farraday was murdered; but a much worse blackmailer took his place - his brother J.R. (Larry Lagman). With copies of Christopher's adoption records in his possession, J.R. realized that he was probably the real father and could force Bobby to do his will so that Pam would never find out.

1990: On GENERAL HOSPITAL, Anna Devane Lavery (Finola Hughes) tried to go for help for Duke (Greg Beecroft) but he insisted it was too late. He died in her arms just as Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) arrived. Robert and Katherine called off their wedding.

1997: Camryn Grimes debuted as Cassie Newman (then known as Cassie Johnson) on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.

2004: On ALL MY CHILDREN, Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel) gave birth to Miranda.
