"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1968: On ANOTHER WORLD, seething with anger after a fight with Liz (Audra Lindley), Bill (Joseph Gallison) crashed his car.

1976: On DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Doug (Bill Hayes) and Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes) were married.

Below are Doug and Julie's vows:

Doug: God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them, and He blessed them.
Julie: And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helpmeet for him.
Doug: Rise up, my love, my fair one and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vine with the tender grape give a good fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
Julie: Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee; for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God. Where thou diest, I will die, and there will I be buried; the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

1979: On AS THE WORLD TURNS, Kim (Kathryn Hays), Grant (James Douglas), Tom (Tom Tammi) and Nancy (Helen Wagner) were concerned about Lisa's (Eileen Fulton) move to the Willows.

1984: On ONE LIFE TO LIVE, Dan asked Dorian (Robin Strasser) if he could spend the night with her, but she kissed him on the cheek and told him there had been a misunderstanding.

1985: John Sanderford made his first appearance as Frank Ryan in RYAN'S HOPE. He was the fifth and final actor to play the role.

  1. Richard council also portrayed hal munson on atwt

  2. Happy Anniversary, Kelly.

  3. Roger, this era of As The World Turns is the one I first remember storylines from; THIS is how I remember the mercurial Lisa!

  4. I was really hoping that Soap Opera Classics would publish a volume of Lisa, including her vivacious (30s) days.

    1. I wanted more Lisa too. There's more to come from the Willows storyline. :)
