Today in Soap Opera History (July 16)
On this date in...
1934: Musical radio soap opera DREAMS COME TRUE premiered on the NBC Red network. The show aired three times a week and revolved around vocalist Barry McKinley. DREAMS COME TRUE was sponsored by Procter & Gamble's Camay soap.
1953: On radio soap opera HILLTOP HOUSE, Julie (Grace Matthews) thought it was too soon to judge Gladys' performance.
1981: Dianne Thompson Neil (now known as Alexandra Neil) debuted as Ruby Wright, Billy Joe's sister, on TEXAS.
1984: On GUIDING LIGHT, Beth (Judi Evans) and Lujack (Vincent Irizarry) almost made love.
1987: Charlotte Ross debuted as Eve on DAYS OF OUR LIVES. She remained on the show until July 12, 1991. Ross is currently starring in VH1's new hit series HIT THE FLOOR.
1988: Irish actor Whitfield Connor died at age 71. He played Mark Holden in THE GUIDING LIGHT from 1955 to the early 1960s.
1996: Paul Lammers died at age 74. He was a producer and director for FROM THESE ROOTS, and lated directed at ANOTHER WORLD, THE DOCTORS and AS THE WORLD TURNS, where he worked for decades. He won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1993 as part of the ATWT team. The cause of his death was cancer, said his companion, Dr. Leo Altschul.
2001: Melissa Archer debuted as Natalie on ONE LIFE TO LIVE.
2004: Kirsten Storms aired for the last time as Belle Black on DAYS OF OUR LIVES.
2008: Forbes March made his final appearance as Nash on ONE LIFE TO LIVE.
2010: On EASTENDERS, having secretly quit his gay conversion therapy, Syed Masood (Marc Elliott) still struggled with being a gay man and a Muslim. But as Syed's parents prepared for a dinner party with the local "matchmaker" to find their son a new wife, Syed gave his Qur'an to his younger brother and walked out of the family home in search of Christian (John Partridge), his former lover. When the couple met in Albert Square, Syed bared his heart and soul to the man he loved hoping they could reconcile.
