Steve Burton: Y&R 'Means As Much To CBS As CSI'

A new Associated Press story on the 40th anniversary of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS was published Monday with quotes from some of the cast, executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, head writer Josh Griffith, and Angelica McDaniel, senior vice president of daytime for CBS.

Steve Burton, who has played war veteran Dylan McAvoy since January noticed a difference in how soaps are treated at CBS compared to ABC.

"YOUNG AND RESTLESS means as much to CBS as CSI does and that's saying something," he said. "That all starts from the top down."

Carolyn Hinsey, veteran chronicler of daytime dramas and author of "Afternoon Delight: Why Soaps Still Matter," agreed

"ABC was not loyal to its (canceled) soaps, and did not try to monetize them or promote them," she said. "CBS has been very loyal to Y&R and B&B, especially lately. No new show is going to draw the millions of devoted eyeballs daily that Y&R has enjoyed for 40 years."

  1. Uh huh. It means something to CBS. Until the ratings drop.

  2. Y&R means a lot to CBS but apparently not ATWT, nor GL.

  3. The people running CBS Daytime now actually care about their daytime lineup, but it's a few years too late to possibly save GL and ATWT. :(

  4. I cannot lay blame for the demise of CBS' Daytime lineup on the network. Procter & Gamble owned Guiding Light and As The World Turns and the company wanted out the soap business. The production company tanked both shows creatively for years before they were pulled from the air. I LOVE GL & ATWT yet acknowledge that the shows limped off the air and neither ended in creative health (unlike OLTL which ABC cancelled on the same day as AMC.)

At least I have many classic episodes of GL & ATWT on DVD! Thanks Roger and the staff at SoapClassics.
