Today in Soap Opera History (July 23)

On this date in...

1966: Legendary producer and director Ted Corday died at age 58.  Corday moved from Broadway to radio dramas to television directing THE GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS.  In 1965 NBC asked Corday to create three new daytime soap operas leading to the premieres of DAYS OF OUR LIVES, PARADISE BAY and MORNING STAR.    DAYS continues to this day while the other two shows were went off the air July 1, three weeks before Corday's death.

1979: On ANOTHER WORLD, Cecile (Susan Keith) forgave Elena but would not take Dennis back. 

1980: TEXAS actor Chandler Hill Harben debuted on ANOTHER WORLD as Max Dekker.  He played the role on TEXAS until February 1981 when future GUIDING LIGHT star Jay Hammer took over.  Harben went on to star in ANOTHER LIFE.

1984: Eileen Fulton returned to AS THE WORLD TURNS and taped her first episode which would air on August 3.

1984: On GUIDING LIGHT, Darcy wanted Lujack to prove he was really back with the Galahads.



1987: Quinn Redeker aired for the final time as Alex Marshall in DAYS OF OUR LIVES.

  1. Just adding that I believe when the Alex Marshall character exited Days, Quinn Redeker stepped right into the role of the bum whom Jill found on the park bench to be the man she'd have woo Kay, becoming the memorable Rex Sterling.

  2. Didn't he go straight to DAYS when he left Y&R as Nick Reed? So he came full circle. :) Or was there some time in between because he was nominated for an Oscar for The Deer Hunter.

    Speaking of DAYS, his off-set romance with Deidre Hall fills the pages of my 1980-1981 old soap magazines. :)

  4. Roger, you're absolutely right about Redeker moving over to Days as Alex Marshall immediately following his run as Nick Reed on Y&R. I have an old issue of SOD from 1979 where he's listed in both the ''Entrances & Exits'' section for Days & Y&R (respectively).
