Eloisa Cruz Canlas Dead at 66

Legendary Filipino radio drama queen Eloisa Cruz Canlas, who earned the nickname "Lola Sela Bungangera," died on July 15. She was 66.

Canlas was brought to a ParaƱaque hospital days after she was discharged from St. Luke's Medical Center on July 10. Canlas had been in a coma after after being hit by a taxi in Quezon City last November.

Canlas was the voice behind "Lola Sela Bungangera with the Senior Citizen & Livelihood Project" on dzRH, her home network since she began her career there as a production assistant in 1968.

She pioneered in radio operas in the Philippines in the 1970s that endorsed soap products such as Safeguard, Tide, Mr. Clean, Camay and many others.

Canlas received the University of the Philippines Gawad Plaridel Award last year for her contribution to the broadcast industry.
