Are you a fan of AS THE WORLD TURNS? Then Christmas just came early this year! For the first time ever, the groundbreaking television drama will soon be available on DVD, exclusively from SoapClassics. With the October 14 release of the first four-disc (20 episode) collection, now you (and your friends, neighbors, and loved ones) can "Own The World."
AS THE WORLD TURNS, originally called AS THE EARTH TURNS when Irna Phillips wrote the bible in 1955, ran for more than 54 years on CBS, concluding its run in September of 2010. During its tenure, it garnered over 100 million viewers all over the world, won 62 Emmy awards, and was the top-rated daytime drama for 20 years.
This first collection (1979-2010) contains four, five-episode discs:
Disc 1: Great Weddings
Disc 2: Secrets and Scandals
Disc 3: Oakdale Through the Years
Disc 4: Villains and Vixens
Every disc is full of unforgettable moments, from the infamous John-and-Lucinda hot tub scene to the devastating boathouse explosion, from Luke courageously coming out to his parents to Lily finally discovering the truth about hers. And of course, no collection is complete without, "Hello, Barbara."
This historic offering marks the first time that entire daytime soap opera episodes of this kind are available to the public on DVD. If there is enough interest, we may even see additional curated collections of AS THE WORLD TURNS. And who knows, with enough public support, GUIDING LIGHT, ANOTHER WORLD, THE EDGE OF NIGHT and SEARCH FOR TOMORROW could be next.
The set will cost $19.95. It will be exclusively available for purchase on the website www.Soapclassics.com or by phone at (800) 998 5199.
Industry expert (and lifelong AS THE WORLD TURNS aficionado), We Love Soaps own Roger Newcomb, describes his experience working on the collection as a "labor of love" adding "it was a joy working on this project. I saw episodes I had never seen before in the pre-VCR days."
Stay tuned for more details and look for the website to be up and running later tonight.
I wonder if there are any plans to release this here in the Netherlands. The show is very popular here. I would love to have this DVD set, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to play these discs on a European player...
ReplyDeleteMark, these DVDs will be available internationally. So buy 10!
ReplyDeleteSo are these dvd's region free? Because the US dvd's usually have region code 1, while Europe is region code 2. :)
ReplyDeleteI was told they were open to international sales, but you have a great point so I will ask that specific question.
ReplyDeleteThanks Roger.
ReplyDeleteBTW, is it just me or is that website not working (yet)?
I did send an e-mail to RTL Netherlands to see if they are interested in releasing it here. Complete seasons of GTST are being released on DVD so I'm sure people would be interested in this DVD set. :)
I need to bold that last sentence! The website will be up later tonight. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL! Let's just blame it on the fact that it's almost 1:30 here. :P
ReplyDeleteThis sounds great! Looking forward to seeing these wonderful stories and characters again. Hoping this prompts the other soaps to do the same thing, especially Days.
ReplyDeleteThis made my night!!! I ordering tomorrow and would love to see all the other soaps as mentioned, but especially my GL....Gawd look what they put together. ATWT was my 2nd favorite and you know we should see Besty (Meg) & Steve, Marcy & Stewart. Hope to see some Barbara and Emily, especially when Emily (Melanie) bedded Paul...I going to cry now because I miss my soaps.
ReplyDeleteSo, so happy about this! It'll be nice to see classic episodes of the show in good quality.
ReplyDeleteI'll be ordering a copy!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited about this. It's what ATWT fans have been asking for forever! Plus I know there is so much more I want. I hope it is a huge success so we can get more sets. And I'd love for all the cancelled soaps to have the same opportunity. I look forward to reliving some moments and as you say seeing some from the non-VCR days! Hope everyone will help spread the word.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait!! I am definitely going to buy the CD. Hope to see more ATWT DVDs in the near future!
ReplyDeleteYay awesome - can't wait to order my copy. Looking forward to seeing all Holden/Lily stuff. Also Bob, Kim, Nancy and the rest of the Hughes clan <3. Wish Katie was in the chosen episodes more but that's a tiny quip. Woohoo, thank you! Would be VERY interested more episodes.
ReplyDeleteThe link to order the DVD's doesnt work it brings me to a website that isnt anything to do with this...
ReplyDeleteThe website will be fully functional tonight. Everyone is working hard to make it happen.
ReplyDeleteWill be ordering soon. Please, please, please do Guiding Light next!!
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you are offering these DVD'S. I loved that show and Guiding Light. Thank you for doing this. I wish they would bring them back on tv.
ReplyDeleteThank you again
So excited to buy the DVDs! Just read that u helped compile them--that is so cool Roger! I hope that there will be more DVDs to follow. Did my fave Henry make any of the DVDs?
ReplyDeletePS--IF OLTL & AMC do well with the move to online and/or cable-do you think there is any chance of Prospect Park resurrecting ATWT in the future?
I am so excited to hear this wonderful news and I will definitely be getting mine tomorrow!!! I hope sales are fantastic in the hopes that perhaps more DVD sets are released.l I'd love for "The Best Of..." couples DVD (specifically CarJack for me!)set for the various couples throughout the years. I would imagine these would do quite well. Regardless, I love that ATWT is going to be available finally on DVD! Fantastic!!!! Thanks Roger for your contribution in getting this done - hugs!
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful news, Roger--yay!
ReplyDeleteBrian :-)
$16.95 for shipping within the United States? That's a bit ridiculous, especially considering the fact the DVD set is only $19.95. I would rather spend more money on the product itself instead of so much on shipping.
ReplyDeleteAre there plans for more ATWT DVDs and not just similar sets for the other P&G shows?
Oh well, not complaining I paid it because to me it's worth it have these great episodes. I want it to succeed and $40 is what I spend on something else such fast food a month...but this will last a lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI'm thrilled about this but $16.95 for domestic shipping of 4 DVDs is ridiculous. I'll wait for the streaming video.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to add that contrary to what was stated in the article, full episodes of a daytime soap opera have been previously released on DVD boxes. Several years ago, I bought a DVD box released in Australia with 21 full episodes on 5 discs of The Bold and the Beautiful. A much treasured box indeed! In Germany, 2 DVD boxes of 1987 episodes of B&B have also been released. They are available via amazon.de
ReplyDeleteMy shipping was only $4.95...? Order placed!
ReplyDeletei hope GENERAL HOSPITAL WILL ALSO COME OUT WITH A DVD TOO!
ReplyDeleteMy order originally had the $16 shipping, but I refreshed the page at it corrected to $4.95. Can't wait! Love that Van Hansis is prominently featured. :)
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to tell them their episode guides are erroneous. They've got something with Carly dated 1983 (which just can't be) while Luke is coming out in 1984. lol!
