ABC Buys Nashville Primetime Soap From Callie Khouri & RJ Cutler, Producing with Gaylord

According to Deadline.com, ABC has bought a primetime soap from Oscar-winning writer Callie Khouri and TV producer/documentary filmmaker RJ Cutler with a script commitment plus penalty. Thelma & Louise scribe Khouri will write the project, which is set in Nashville against the backdrop of the country music world. Cutler (The September Issue) is set to direct. And we had just mentioned Nashville in our Today in Soap Opera History feature today.

The two will executive produce with Nashville-based Gaylord Entertainment (Opryland Hotel!), which is being represented by SVP of Media and Entertainment Steve Buchanan.

The drama is produced by leading cable producer Lionsgate TV, which is having its most active broadcast development season ever under new head of development Chris Selak.

If only one of the many rumor Nashville-based series actually made it to air and was as good as Robert Altman's Nashville movie...

  1. I wonder if it might actually be recorded in Nashville? Maybe at a studio in the Opryland Hotel complex?

  2. Let's see....they cancel daytime soaps because they say there isn't an audience for them and now they buy a night-time soap....along with Desperate Housewives, Greys Anatomy, etc. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Chew on it.
