SWITCHED AT BIRTH Secrets: "The Homecoming"

The painting that inspired the title of the final 2011 episode of SWITCHED AT BIRTH is most likely "The Homecoming," pictured, by Jennie Augusta Brownscombe. It's fun to note the resemblance between the little girl in the painting and Daphne Vasquez (Katie LeClerc). The painting was completed in 1885 and was recently sold to a private collector for almost $30,000.

According to The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Brownscombe has been called "a kind of Norman Rockwell of her era." In fact, the skillful drawing, attention to detail, and nostalgic moods of her paintings make the comparison between Jennie Augusta Brownscombe and the popular American illustrator seem quite apt. Like Bay Kennish (Vanessa Marano), she was talented from a young age and won her first awards as a high school student, exhibiting her work at the county fair.

In episode 10 of SWITCHED AT BIRTH, also entitled “The Homecoming,” Bay’s biological father, Angelo (Gilles Marini), shows up at her school art show, causing Bay much stress. Not sure how to react, she decides she does not want anything to do with him, until the curiosity is too much to bear.

Although Regina (Constance Marie) is furious with Angelo, it becomes clear the two have a more complicated history than any have realized. Meanwhile, Daphne decides to tell Emmett (Sean Berdy) how she feels about him, triggering a whole stream of emotions for Emmett, who has always loved her.

We'll have to wait until early 2012 more SWITCHED AT BIRTH. In the meantime, I'd like to suggest a work of art for episode 11: "The Love Embrace..." (at left) by Frida Kahlo. What do you think?
