TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY Poll - Five Best Explanations for Why No One Is Dying

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY is so seductive, the way it walks the tightrope between telling us too much and being totally obtuse. John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness is trying to find out why everyone in the world is not dying (except for him). After "Miracle Day" everything changed. But what? Former ALL MY CHILDREN star Alexa Havens is part of the cast this season helping to solve the mystery along with Mekhi Phifer (Rex) and Eve Myles (Gwen). She is excellent in this role by the way.

We have some theories about what is going on. Admittedly, they're not very good--but here they are! Tell us your favorite in the comments section below. Or, even better, if you have your own theory, write it in!

1. Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman) sold his soul in exchange for everlasting life--unbeknownst to him, it's an everyone-or-no-one sort of set-up.
2. Captain Jack Harkness discovered a new technology, which he first tried out on himself. Unfortunately for him, it's an either/or sort of set-up.
3. It's blowback from some top secret CIA operation involving research that went terribly awry, and Newman from SEINFELD--oops Brian Friedkin--is some kind of evil genius.
4. Phicorp put something in the air or water to stop us all from dying (there must have been some sort of trigger mechanism, of course) so they could make a killing (ha, ha!) off of pain meds and antibiotics. (Just think, a few years ago "Fi-Core" meant something totally different to soap fans.)
5. Something about morphic fields, multiverse travel, and alternative realities?

Agree? Disagree? Let us know your thoughts on the mystery and if you are enjoying the latest season of TORCHWOOD. A new episode airs tonight on Starz.

  2. explenation 6. remember owen? this is very similar to that. so the aliens behind the glove have used a planet wide similar device... or phi-corp have the device

  3. I think phi-corp just sold out the planet for money and are the pawns of some alien force.

  4. I think that Jilly is behind this since she seems so shady. Her job description changes each time she talks about her work and she's very vague in her explanations. It's definitely alien, though, and I think Jilly is the human connection between the aliens and Earth. Sort of like how Frobisher was the connection in CoE. I also think that Jack knows more than he's saying

  5. garnetto I like the way you think... my only thing is that I have fairly reliable sources that aliens aren't involved... depends on what you mean by alien though i guess!

  6. Thank god I'm not the only one who saw the similarities to Owen's condition. Personally, I think he's going to end up being behind it all.

  7. Captain Jack can't die because Rose brought him back when she was the Bad Wolf (see Doctor Who series 1 from 2005- series finale- it explains everything to do with Jack's immortality) Knowing that, Jack is a fixed point in time (you hear the 10th Doctor state this in Series 3 of Doctor Who when Jack returns right before that series finale) So it HAS to be something really really big if it can make him mortal and everyone else immortal. So basically, your second theory is invalid.

  8. i say it is that dames guy appeared straight away when torchwood shut down so he could be caught and he killed that girl and regreted it and made everyone mortal and the cia is covering his back because he hypnotised them and it didnt affect rex or that girl because their new to the cia so i suggest when he dames gets caught and gets put out of the planet everyone comes immortal and jack becomes mortal again and the cia becomes un hypnotised

  9. It not at all like Owen. Because he could not heal and he was not aging at all yet the undead of miracle day are healing when healing is possible and they are aging.

  11. I actually wonder if someone is trying to kill Jack. Perhaps this massive shift was the only way to achieve a mortal state for him so that he could be murdered. The Phi-Corp greed story line is way too easy at this point. While they obviously knew the "miracle" was coming, it still begs the question "Why?".

  12. In the episode where Capt Jack and Gwen were tied up to the servers by the hitman, when questioned about Miracle Day and how it happened, I thought he said something like, "they just had to find the right geography". I don't have tivo so I can't go back and listen to the exact wording, but if anyone else remembers him saying that, it kind of makes it sound like they had to find the right "planet"??? Just a guess, but I don't know what else that would mean seeing as it affected all of planet earth. Or maybe they had to find a specific spot on earth that would allow a device they had (which would reverse the world's mortality)to work.
