ATWT Fans: What Are You Watching Today?

If you were a fan of AS THE WORLD TURNS, there may be a hole in your schedule at 2 p.m. ET today. Or perhaps you watched online or on your DVR later. Is another soap replacing ATWT in your daily routine or on your DVR? If so, which one? Are you going to use that hour for something completely different? Will you follow the ATWT actors to other soaps? Let us know.

  1. I have only one soap left, GOEDE TIJDEN SLECHTE TIJDEN. I think I would only watch another soap if one of my favorite ATWT actors joins one.

BTW, I still have to watch the last 5 episodes. I seem to keep postponing it because if I start watching them, I know it'll really be over. :)

I'm glad GTST is not in danger of cancellation. I don't think I could handle that. Next week they're going to celebrate the 20th anniversary. Not only on one episode, but during the whole week. The characters Lucas and Noud organize a party because the local pub "De Koning" is 20 years old. They're going to make a film and will be interviewing the Meerdijkians about their years living in Meerdijk. So it looks like we'll get a lot of flashbacks. The anniversary week ends on Friday, October 1 with a big party at "De Koning". It's rumored that a few former actors/characters will show up at that party.

  2. I will be watching OLTL. Got to support the shows that still remain.

  3. ONE LIFE TO LIVE, although I have my doubts how much longer this show has with Jean Passanante joining the writing team and Brian Frons as the head of ABC daytime...

  4. No I won't be watching any other soaps at that time period. I will or have been lately now peeking in AMC again and I like..still Y&R, no B&B, OLTL, GH...it frees up my afternoons now before work. Never will support "The Talk" puke, gag!!

  5. Might I say, DAYS has been on fire these last few weeks! It is on at 1pm in New York, but it is still a wonderful soapy fix.

  6. My everyday habit is done.

But I will probably peek into OLTL when Zimmer starts (how could I not?) and same for Y&R when Maura West starts.

  7. I will be watching "EASTENDERS" to see Kat's return. But I will also be tuning in to Y&R to see Nina's touching farewell to Chance and her fascinating reunion with Ronan. Both of these programmes are bold enough to go back in their rich histories and continue or complete stories that were started twenty plus years ago. I find that a much more rewarding and exciting kind of storytelling than the shows that pretend that they only began 6 minutes ago.

  8. Since Y&R airs here locally at 9am (a day behind), I'll be watching my DVRed ep of that morning's episode of Y&R at 2pm.

  9. I started watching ATWT with my college roomate around September, 1970. Today we sadly watched the finale - life goes on - but our days of discussing soap opera plots, characters, etc. are over.

  10. Dave, was there something happening in Sept. 1970 that got you hooked or was ATWT the #1 game in town and just on the television at the right time? Would love to watch some episodes from that time.

  11. I'm watching the new Damon L. Jacobs pic on facebook. Grrrrrr (lol)

  12. At this point I won't be replacing ATWT. I took a very brief look into B&B but find I'm just not up to it. I'll continue on with GH and cherish those rare days free of Sonny. In the end, I know that my days of allegiance to one show have died with ATWT.

  13. No plans to replace ATWT at this time. I will check on OLTL periodically, but for now, I have no more "appointment" daytime tv.

  14. I'll check out OLTL nightly on SoapNet while SN is still playing! Otherwise, I'm through with daily soap-viewing loyalty!

  15. I do not plan to watch a new soap. My daily soap watching is done. I would like to support OLTL since it is the last remaining soap taping here in NYC and I know one of the writers. But Jean Passante? Please. That show will suck within 4 months.

I plan on watching old ATWT from the 80's and the like on YouTube - people have TONS of clips and full episodes from shows throughout the year (I've watched all the 60's episodes I could get my hands on).

Plus, there is a person on YouTube who has cut down all episodes of Dark Shadows into 10 1/2 minute "minisodes". I watch one of those before I go to bed at night. I just started graduate school and so don't have a ton of time. I find it perfect to wind down at the end of the day.

  17. I have been a fan of both Guiding Light and As the World Turns since 1982. When GL was cancelled, I knew that I would continue watching ATWT until that show was cancelled. Now that the time has come that both shows are gone, I do not know if I want to emotionally invest in a new show. I will probably check out Maura West and Paul Leyden on Y&R. If they can get me hooked, then I might add Y&R to my viewing list. If not, then my soap days are over.

  18. Won't be replacing ATWT with a substitute daytime drama. I might check out Y&R to see Maura West or another show if a fave ATWTer is on, but otherwise my soap quotient is going to be limited to "The Archers" on BBC Radio 4 (which I highly recommend to anyone who wants a great generational/family soap).

  19. no i wont be watching any other soaps in the ATWT time period i will never watch "the talk" i will continue to watch Y&R on CBS but that will be the only show i will watch on CBS and i am excited that Maura West will be joining the show Paul Leydon never did anything for me so thet makes no difference to me i have watched ATWT for over 35 yrs and it feels like a loss of a good friend and i will miss it yes i will follow the actors to other soaps/shows i also watch GH and have for the last 25 yrs as with Y&R --i tried B&B but for me its not doing it i have heard that P&G will not be allowing you tube or hulu to show any ATWT_GL_AW classic shows after oct 21 is that true? if so P&G really stinks!!!!

  20. I've been watching ATWT for 50 years.

I was trying all day to see the final photos from CBS.com. THis is the message I got:

    Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /daytime/as_the_world_turns/finale/photos/Friday,_September_17,_2010/ on this server.

When I got this message on Thursday, I thought it was just a glitch with my computer (I had always been able to view all the albums CBS posted on the ATWT fan site). When I still couldnt see them yesterday, I thought maybe it was because I am Canadian (all videos are blocked for some stupid reason). Then, last night I found out that CBS has blocked everyone from seeing the fan albums. WHY????? Now, no one can see the photos of Jack & Carly's wedding or the finale. Why would CBS do this to the fans? If anyone knows, please let me know. Also if anyone has access to the photos form JPI episodes 13857 and 13858 please post them, so that the rest of us fans (50 years for me) can see them. Thanks, Angela

  21. I am done with daily serials. I have nothing on my dvr in the same time slot. Years ago I watched Y&R and B&B but I have no real connection to them - even with Maura and Paul. If I had any thoughts about watching OLTL I won't do anything to support Jean P. I am looking forward to her being out of work as soon as possible.

I feel completely justified in my feelings after reading todays AfterElton story about why she chose to kill Reid. She made us suffer Janet and her God Father complex, and then picked Reid out of a hat? I am chanting for OLTL to be canceled as soon as possible. Well, mostly because of her, but seriously I can't imaging watching Kim Zimmer ever again either. Perhaps if Colleen Zenk were to be hired instead I might rethink my position.

I don't like to sound so hostile on the boards, but I think as the pool of daytime writers and producers keeps getting smaller any hope for something good to happen is reduced as well. Rather than cultivating new talent, the same old creative group that has painted daytime into a corner on other shows keeps landing at a new home. The results are pretty much the same. The same stories, the same lack of fresh perspective, and a complete lack of ability to take this genre forward.

I could say that it would be great it the networks bothered to really promote daytime during primetime the way the endlessly promote primetime during the day. However TPTB seem to think that daytime viewers grow on trees and just tune in because. For that reason alone I don't want to reward any network with my viewership.

Regardless of the demographics, very few of us in the viewing audience have the time to invest in the same way daytime has always been done. The demands on my time and the sophistication of alternative programming make it harder to let a five day a week show waste my time meandering all over the place. I still want creative stories and larger than life characters but I don't have time to see the same action over and over and over again.

Desperate Housewives, Mad Men and others can tell compelling stories in an hour, so with three times the numbers of characters, I expect daytime to be able to deliver the same compelling stories without endless repetition and needless filler. I am not interested in the same pre fab unrealistic look of daytime either. If the producers don't want to really figure out how to make daytime look and feel like other programming, I don't have much I can say other than they really haven't managed to keep up with the times and again, why should I reward them?

These shows were groundbreaking and fabulous at one time, they need to be that again or there isn't much that can be done. They need to be able to attract new viewers. If daytime created the model for nearly all primetime dramas then they need to get back to their creative roots and shake things up again before it is too late.

As always, thanks so much to WLS.com for the thoughtful forums and articles.

  23. I'm trying to get into OLTL, getting ready for Kim Zimmer in Oct. Nice to see some Ross Mauler and Dana on their, but don't know what the hell is going on. If they want to attract more audiences I hope soaps get more ATWT & GL stars. But I just don't see them playing anyone else. Like Bob, Kim, Lisa, Lucinda and Barbra. There is on one like them. I have 200 channels and HBO and Cinimax.

  24. Once upon a time in High School, I started watching GH religiously. For several years, my dream was to go to college, major in writing, and become a soap opera writer. Over the years, I spent a little bit of time watching all the shows: Loving, AMC, OLTL, Sunset Beach, Passions, B&B, Y&R, GL, DAYS, SB, AW, and now I can go onto YouTube and other online entities and catch the soaps that were gone before I ever had a chance to view, like Search For Tomorrow, Love Of Life, Secret Storm, Edge Of Night, and the list goes on. ATWT had a special distinction for having all-around high production values, a great ensemble, older, long-term characters that had a presence (Watching episodes of GH from the 80's for example, and everyone is GONE!@). I just can't get into my GH anymore, it just doesn't have a heart like ATWT did. I started watching to catch Lynn Herring and Stuart Damon's cameos last year, and ended up LOVING this show! Now, for the past 2 years, I don't even own a television, as there is nothing, short of classic TV re-runs that I want to watch anymore, so I watched ATWT at my desk on my computer at work every morning. I'm impressed to see the cast of characters showing up on some of the internet series, like "The Bay". A veritable Who's Who of past and present. So I'm hoping that I can still be loyal to my love of soaps via the internet. I just can't watch GH regularly anymore, it hurts too much to watch, never really got into AMC and OLTL after the early 90's, and Y&R and B&B I just find too pretentious. But in my opinion, it is not just daytime, it is television in general that has gone downhill in the new millenium. But thank god for DVD's and videotapes!@
