Soaps still cherished by UK viewers
British soaps have a special place in the nation's heart, attracting huge ratings and generating political debate, despite being gritty, unglamorous and derided routinely by cultural commentators.
"American soaps are about watching beautiful people suffer," says Tim Teeman, arts editor of Britain's Times newspaper and a big soap fan. "We like to watch ugly people suffer."

Ilene Kristen (Roxy, OLTL) is expected to join the cast of THE BAY in the third chapter as Liza Garrett, playing opposite Tristan Rogers. Liza is Sara Garrett's (Mary Beth Evans) aunt and Lex Martin's (Tristan Rogers) ex-wife. Expect Kristen's and Evans' characters to clash.

I get why the fans want it; I’d probably want it too if I was just watching. But I literally feel sick every time think about Meredith in a big white poufy dress.”
I totally agree with Tim Teeman's statement. Having seen both UK and American soaps, I also feel that we can relate more to the storylines by UK soaps (although the Otalia storyline on GL was the exception).
