It wasn't the first high school gay kiss in primetime but it was nice to see Justin have his first kiss (with Austin) last night before UGLY BETTY goes off the air. UGLY BETTY has had a terrific final season.
Thanks for linking to that! I hate that they moved UGLY BETTY to the kiss of the death timeslot of 10, because I always forget it's on. YAY for Justin! He was so rocked off his axis at the end there.
I know that it is great that Ugly Betty will be going out on such a creative all time high, but it hurts me as well. This show still has at least another two seasons of story to tell. The cats and crew raised the bar this season. The last few episodes have truly been classic episodes. A diverse, funny, talented cast. How can ABC can just let this quality show go. Sometimes you need to do whats right and now what's popular darn it. Sigh.
Lonley Justin is a queer male of color both his parents are Latin. I have to disagree with you. They have build their storylines. Life is messy people come and go in otu of our lives. Matt and betty were in love but their relationship was far from healthy. hence why in the end it didn't work. So last night's episode showed how much Betty has grown from when we first met her. Here was a guy who was not treating her right and this time around she was able to realize it and move on for something better. She is reaalizing her self worth.
i disagree jordan. all of betty's rels have been with white guys: henry, her first bf, matt, even her crush on hilda's bf who's portrayed by a latino actor, the show revealed him to be italian? what the hell?
willie hooks up w/ black guys just for the sex, but her true love is white. daniel only had 1 black gf, kissed hilda, and the rest of his women (molly, the girl from the sopranos, models, amanda) are all white.
the show does not feature 2 people of color being in love. they had that chance to have justin's first kiss be w/ someone of color but of course he has to be white. justin obviously has a thing for zac efron clones.
that kiss w/ justin was the usual from ugly betty: all their couples have to have at least 1 person in there as white. tsk.
Betty had a relationship with Gio, and they're even bringing him back. This is one of the most diverse shows on television ever. I applaud them for all they've done to celebrate diversity.
There's no arguing that UB is diverse, and it's one of the most diverse shows around. But my pt is majority of their couples have at least 1 char be white. Why can't Betty be w/ someone black, latino, asian, etc? All the men she's dated are white. Why does Hilda have to marry someone Italian, portrayed by a Latino actor? Why does Willie only use black men for sex but she falls for a white guy?
And now that the show's wrapping up, Daniel's w/ Amanda (both white), Claire had Cal (both white), Willie's true love is obviously Connor (black and white), Betty's going to end up w/ either gio or matt or henry (latina and white), is St. james still with his clingy bf (both white) and hilda's marrying an italian.
that's very disappointing that UB couldn't feature couples where both are people of color, especially now that UB's wrapping up.
I'm pretty sure Gio was Hispanic. And he's the one coming back!
But this post was about Justin's kiss, which was perfect. I love how it was the other guy who initiated it, and how everything else in the world just greyed out at that moment except for them - just like Mark said it would. Perfect.
No one's going to write abt the lack of couples of color on UB, and since Justing and the Zac Efron clone are yet another example of the pairings on UB being 1 white and 1 minority, then it's relevant to bring that up.
Gio was Italian, that's why they wrote him off to go to Italy to find his "cheese" since he's an aspiring chef.
Justin's storyline doesn't even work since it was already established that he's gay. Patti Lupone portrayed Marck St. James's mother when he pretended to be Betty's bf. He lost it when Lupone's char insulted Justin's sexuality.
So this is yet a new, odd writing choice of UB w/c has been UB's problem in the first place. Too many arcs that begin illogically, and they strayed away from the original telenovela, which paired Betty w/ Fernando.
I agree with you lonely. As another big fan of the show and a QPOC, i loved it's ability to show how we as Latino's can embrace BOTH our queer and Latino cultures. i wish they would have paired up Justin with a QPOC, but lets be real about the fact that the show might have felt the pressure to make the show more "inclusive." Although for me the issue is not about inclusiveness/exclusivity (most folks would misinterpret the desire to see 2 QPOC as such), it's about validation and reflection of QPOC in mainstream media, which never validates our QPOC bodies and minds.
