Variety is reporting that Katherine Phillips Hughes, creator of soap opera A WORLD APART, whose mother was a pioneer of daytime TV, died May 12 in Brentwood, Calif. after a brief illness. She was 65.
She was the daughter of soap icon Irna Phillips, who died in 1973.
Phillips Hughes was born and raised in Chicago and followed in her mother's footsteps, creating A WORLD APART which ran on ABC in 1970 and 1971. The series mirrored Phillips' own childhood as one of two children adopted by an unmarried soap opera writer. Susan Sarandon began her acting career portraying the adopted daughter and heroine of the series.
Phillips Hughes moved to Southern California in 1978 and most recently had been developing music and reality television projects. She is survived by a brother.
