INTERVIEW: Soap vet Mark Pinter (Part 2)
"When I first started in daytime, it was 1979 on a show called LOVE OF LIFE. I’ve done a lot of daytime, and I always found myself getting close to older actors. And most of them came from the theater: Shepherd Strudwick (Professor McCauley on LOL; James Matthews on AW), Ron Tomme (Bruce, LOL), Bill Roerick (Henry, GL), Larry Bryggman (John, ATWT). All these people came from the theater. They understood that this was a medium where you were really asked to work, and work fast. But they came from a process, which was the legitimate stage, which is where I came from. I would watch them work on the set and just steal everything I could from them."

CBS casts eye on DEAL, DATING
CBS could be reviving gameshow classics LET'S MAKE A DEAL and THE DATING GAME. They will shoot an in-house pilot for DEAD at the end of May that won't air but will viewed by execs to see how it plays. There's no host yet but those discussions will occur if the project goes forward. The network is looking to fill its daytime slot with the departure of long-running sudser GUIDING LIGHT.

  1. Gee, that's just what we need instead of Guiding Light. The umpteenth rehash of game shows from the past. Are game shows really the future of daytime tv? My 100 year old grandma might watch but she won't buy any of the sponsors products. And I can't imagine she's the target demo.

  2. GL being replace by some cheesy game show revival?! Yuck. Just YUCK.

CBS daytime has lost it's way - GL will find a new home with suits that will be thrilled to promote and nurture it properly. GL will again lead the way in daytime with what I predict is a mass exodus of soaps to cable. They will have more freedom with storylines, additional airing times, possibly even primetime slots. DVRs are wondrous things and cable is ahead of the curve with mining internet viewing and new media.

So all is good. Good luck with the tired game show idea CBS... you'll need it.
