GL Fans Continue to Fight For Their Show

It's been almost a full week since the news of GUIDING LIGHT's cancellation by CBS was first reported. After the initial surprise, the GUIDING LIGHT fans began to rally and have shown incredible support and determination to save their show.

A petition of support has nearly 8,000 signatures and more than one website has popped up encouraging fans to rally behind the show. Fans have written and called to P&G, CBS, cable networks, the media and anyone else who will listen. They do not want this show to die.

On Friday the Tampa Tribune and California Chronicle published a story on the fan campaigns.

April Grant, who is co-creator of a GUIDING LIGHT fan forum, is among those encouraging viewers to write Proctor & Gamble, which owns the series, to show support for taking it to another network.

Grant, 41, whose online pen name is Destini, says that there are millions of fans who will follow GUIDING LIGHT wherever it goes.

"CBS has underestimated the audience for this show," she said in a telephone interview from her home in Vancouver.

"There had been rumors that it might be canceled, but we all thought it would be renewed for at least another year," she says. "It was a complete surprise that blindsided everyone, including the cast."

Grant appeared in two separate CBC radio interviews today as well and spoke out in support of GUIDING LIGHT.

Fans, including Tracey Smeltzer, will appear on a special episode of "BuzzWorthy Radio" on Wednesday night at 10:30pm ET as well.

With passionate fans like this, hopefully P&G's efforts to find a new home for the show will pay off, and the show will be given a chance to build on the momentum gained the past several months.

  2. You have been such a great champion for GL, Roger. Thank you!

We are focused and dedicated to supporting P&G and TeleNext in finding a new home for the show. There is so much good happening on the show right now (Otalia, Phillip, Bill & Lizzie, Shayne & Dinah). It's too good to stop now.

If we have our way, GL will be at a new home after September 18th and continuing to tell great stories for a long time.

  8. Considering how the news of GL's cancellation hit last week(and how heartbreaking it was) I've been thoroughly impressed by how quickly and smartly the various fan bases have mobilized in support of GL - it goes to show how much CBS underestimated the size and passion of GL viewers (young and old). Led by the BPD, there has been an entirely positive approach, as if the themes of the show guide the efforts. To be a part of such a movement is entirely rewarding - lots of good hearted people sincere (and passionate) in their dedication. Who wouldn't want to respond to that!

  19. Thank you, Roger, for covering the ever growing buzz about the efforts to save the show.

P&G knows that Otalia, Bizzie and Shaynah have actually just started to push Guiding Light to new levels of popularity among younger viewers. They know this show is very much alive and gaining momentum with every day Olivia and Natalia pop up on our screens.

I just got this gift of a beautiful representation of two women falling in love and I'm so grateful to Ellen Wheeler, Jill Lorie Hurst, P&G and especially Crystal and Jessica. They have my ardent support.

We will keep up the fight,
    we will save the Light!

  20. Thank you Roger for continuing to cover the campaign to save the Light. I, too, am impressed at how quickly everyone mobilized to save this American icon. The buzz surrounding not only Otalia, but Bizzie and Shaynah, was putting Guiding Light back on the soap opera map and I think CBS made a huge mistake pulling the show at this time. Destini is doing an excellent job at being the voice for us. Save the Light!

  21. Roger, thank you so much for continuing to support us and the show!

I think the fact that so many people have started campaigning should speak volumes about how their viewing audiences hasn't been counted in a way it should.

Not only the Big Purple Army but others as well. This is a show that deserves support and recognition.

    Thank you again!

  22. Thanks Roger for all you are doing to help us in our fight to keep this great show on the air.

We are a motivated fan base because this show is important, and it's what's been missing in tv programming for awhile now. I and many other won't stop until we see a new home for Guiding Light, and especially Otalia.
