Coming Soon: GH-style Soap For Canada's North

CBC.ca is reporting that a new daytime Canadian soap is on the way.

An Inuvialuit TV production society in Inuvik, N.W.T., is teaming up with another native broadcaster in the Yukon to work on a daytime drama series based in Canada's North.

A hospital in Whitehorse will be the setting for the weekly series, which will focus on relationships between Inuvialuit and Gwich'in characters and air on APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network).

Topsy Cockney, executive director of the Inuvialuit Communications Society in Inuvik, said the show is "like a soap opera."

"[We're] looking for an Inuvialuit doctor and maybe a First Nation doctor. And one of them might be male, and one of them might be female," she said.

Jennifer Podemski, a producer on the project, said the series will be more light-hearted than the average soap opera.

APTN has undergone a re-brand of its network which includes on-air, on-line and news production components. The network is rolling out its new ‘face’ throughout March.
