Tonight is the 81st Annual Academy Awards on ABC. I tend to pull for the underdogs at the Oscars especially when there is an overwhelmiing favorite but I also get sentimental in certain categories. Below are my Oscar picks - who I want to win and who is the most soapy nominee.
BEST PICTURE
My pick: Milk. It will probably be Slumdog which I loved as well but I'm rooting for the story of Harvey Milk.
Most soapy nominee: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button starred Brad Pitt who was on a few episodes of ANOTHER WORLD and DALLAS, Milk featured former ATWT actor Joseph Cross in a supporting role. But Frost/Nixon has the best combination of former soap actor and significant role with former GUIDING LIGHT star Kevin Bacon.
BEST DIRECTOR
My Pick: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Most soapy nominee: None of the nominees are particularly "soapy", but Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon) has done the most TV so I'll go with him.
BEST ACTOR
My Pick: Sean Penn, Milk
Most soapy nominee: As previously mentioned, Bratt Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) spent a few days on ANOTHER WORLD in 1987 followed by an appearance on DALLAS so he is defnitely the soapiest of these men. Runner-up would be Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) for his run on SIX FEET UNDER as Nathaniel Fisher.
BEST ACTRESS
My Pick: Kate Winslett, The Reader
Most soapy nominee: Melissa Leo (Frozen River) spent a year on ALL MY CHILDREN as Linda Warner.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
My Pick: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Most soapy nominee: Ledger got his start on the Australian soap SWEAT and later appeared on HOME AND AWAY. Robert Downey, Jr. would be runner-up here for his stint on ALLY MCBEAL.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
My Pick: Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Most soapy nominee: Marisa Tomei is the most soapy out all these nominees having spent two years in a visible role on AS THE WORLD TURNS as the memorable Marcy Thompson.
