FLASHBACK: 1st Annual Youth in Film Awards 1980

The first Youth in Film Awards ceremony took place in 1980 and honored the best young actors in television and film. The awards are now called the Young Artist Awards. Back then there were categories specifically for young daytime performers.

The nominees that year were:

BEST JUVENILE ACTRESS IN A DAYTIME SERIES
Tracey Bregman, DAYS OF OUR LIVES (Donna Craig)
Genie Ann Francis, GENERAL HOSPITAL (Laura Webber)
Natasha Ryan, DAYS OF OUR LIVES (Hope Williams)

BEST JUVENILE ACTOR IN A DAYTIME SERIES
Shawn Campbell, THE DOCTORS (Billy Aldrich)
Meegan King, DAYS OF OUR LIVES (Pete Curtis)
Mikey Martin, DAYS OF OUR LIVES (Dougie LeClair)

Bregman and King took home the honors that first year. Bregman has gone on to decades of soap success on both THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. She won a Daytime Emmy award in 1985 as Outstanding Ingenue. Bregman won another Youth in Film award in 1984.

Francis is one of the great soap icons and finally earned an Emmy of her own in 2007. She won a Youth in Film award in 1981.

The other nominees have very few credits after their soap stints and none have any listings on IMDB after 1987.

Shawn Campbell, who played Billy Adrich before Alec Baldwin on THE DOCTORS, also had a memorable run as Ricky Donnelly on LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING. His mother was played by the legendary Beverlee McKinsey. He died in 1993 at the age of 34. He
