[His return] felt perfect. He comes home with his son, he’s more mature; I can relate to him in my own life, because I have two children myself."

Glover-McGee's hands work magic on the ATWT faces

Stephanie Glover-McGee has been around well-dressed people her entire life. Everything was always meticulous for her parents, Steve and Virginia Glover.

Women with colorful hats and dresses lined the pews on Sundays when her family went to service at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark. Glover-McGee took it all in, even the church fashion show that may have laid the path for her Emmy-award winning career.

"I think about that time," she said. "Maybe it stuck with me then."

Glover-McGee, who now lives in Whippany, recently won her fourth Emmy for her work as a makeup artist on AS THE WORLD TURNS. She was one of the show's four makeup artists recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup for a drama series at the 35th Creative & Arts Entertainment Daytime Emmy Awards at Lincoln Center.

"I sought none of this," Glover-McGee said. "It took a life of its own."

She didn't go to school to be a makeup artist. It was just something she picked up as a curious girl watching her mother before church. She did it for family members and friends when she went to college. Think of her as the one who cuts hair in the dorm room to make a few bucks. She did makeup and had a flair for it.

Glover-McGee, who has a bachelor of fine arts degree from Howard University, is a graduate of Arts High School in Newark, where the arts became her world. She danced in New York, dabbled some as an actress in the ¤'80s, but continued her facial artwork for friends in show business who wanted to look professional in their portfolios.

It was a side gig, one she didn't expect to get paid to do. She just loved making people look good, using the contours of their faces as her canvas. To her, it's art, creating a look, a feel, a memorable image through her skills as a painter.

"I didn't see it as a career," she said.

But that's what happened. People in the industry began to see her work and they started calling. Television, film companies, video. She's versed in special effects, knows how to make people age or bruise with something as simple as blush, mascara and an eyeliner pencil. And just from reading a script, Glover-McGee can sketch what she thinks a character should look like.

"There are some makeup artists who put on your face no matter what you say. She talks and finds out what you are interested in and what you want to look like today. She's not just a makeup machine," said Elizabeth Hubbard (Lucinda).

Peter Parros, a screenwriter well known for his role as Dr. Ben Harris on ATWT, said his good friend has a calming effect in the dressing room, the gathering place on a set.

"The artist has to deal with everybody in a very intimate way," he said. "You're in there getting personal contact. That's what she brings. That's who she is."

Great-granddaughter of Skiles founder has hit the big time
When the credits rolled Friday after AS THE WORLD TURNS, you may have seen the name Deirdre Skiles. And if you’ve spent any time in downtown Holland (Michigan), you may have wondered if the new cast member is related to the Skiles of Skiles Tavern.

Deirdre is the great-granddaughter of Chester Skiles, who opened the tavern in the 1960s. She is the granddaughter of Bill Skiles, who spent some time as a Secret Service agent. She’s the daughter of Patrick and Dianna Skiles, who moved to Pleasant Ridge, Mich., where Deirdre grew up. She went to Interlochen Arts Academy and Rutgers University. She had a part in a film called “Lake Wonderful,” and now, at the age of 23, landed a part on AS THE WORLD TURNS

Deirdre’s character, however, has had a more tumultuous life. A site called welovesoaps.com explains: “Dani Andropolous (is) the daughter of Steve Andropolous and Betsy Stewart, one of the all-time classic couples in all of daytime. Dani was born in October 1983 and, for a period of time, Craig Montgomery let Betsy think he was her father. It was later revealed that Steve fathered Betsy, and Steve and Betsy wed, in one of the highest-rated daytime episodes ever.”
