News Brief

TV Guide Canada's weekly "Nelson Ratings"

Nelson Branco reviews of last week's soaps, provides this week’s viewing cheat sheet, and names his top-rated actors and shows!

Deep Soap: Same Story, Different Context
Marlena (Deidre Hall) on DAYS OF OUR LIVES will be in trouble when Stefano decides to pay her back for putting him into a drug induced coma. According to Hall, "Stefano comes back and he’s pissed! He comes right after her. He’s going to do to her what she did to him. But in the midst of it, in her drugged state she sees her sister, Samantha. I’m going to play both parts. [Previously the role was played by Hall’s real life sister, Andrea.] I shoot it on Wednesday. We pulled some old tapes and I’m working with a coach."

Remembered: A Day With the Late, Great Larry Haines
Marlena De Lacroix blogs: "Larry Haines passed away July 17 at 89 in Delray Beach, Fla. How sad that is for soap fans! He was a character actor character’s actor. During the 35 years on SEARCH FOR TOMORROW, he delivered, wit, wisdom, tears, inspiration, love, sympathy, excitement, sweetness, pathos and more. And he played all that in just one character, Stu Bergman.

In 1986, I had the opportunity to work with Haines for two episodes of Search. The show was about to be cancelled and NBC was looking for newspaper publicity. So to write a story on what it was like to act on a soap, I was cast as Connie Bronson, a bitchy 80s hair teased-out-to-there nightclub critic (typecasting?) who had an axe to grind with Stu’s then love, a singer named Wilma Holliday, played by adorable Anita Gillette."

INTERVIEW: NIGHT SHIFT's Antonio Sabato, Jr.

LYNN LICCARDO: Don't Shoot the Messenger
"In a lot of ways, [Jon] Hensely reminds me of Kyle Chandler, who once again, was not nominated for a primetime Emmy for his work in FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. A few weeks back I talked about Ginia Bellafante and her disdain for soap actors here. But this particular quote from that piece in the Times, 'Kyle Chandler, an actor viscerally aware of his character's psychological limitations,' very much applies to Hensely, and the current situation his character faces.

INTERVIEW: Kelley Menighan Hensley
"Once all of this happens [with Tom and Margo], Emily's like, 'What do I have to lose?' She's slightly hesitant, but then there's this free spirit of a young man saying, 'I love you. You love me. We're not hurting anybody. What are we so afraid of?' Emily's always afraid of what other people are going to think, when the truth of the matter is: Who really cares? And the way Billy [Magnussen] plays it, it's just filled with such goodness, there's no ulterior motive."

The Nuke Fancast: Episode #8
In addition to the regular features like the hiliarious recap and question of the week, this week's episode features an interview with soap writer and blogger, Sara A. Bibel.

Former AMC star Eva LaRue dishes on wedding plans
“We’re kind of going crazy trying to find a spot. We thought about going back to Africa, but we’re afraid the kids are going to be eaten by lions. When you look the other way, your kid could be prey,” said the actress, whose daughter Kaya is 6. Joe has two grown children of his own.

Previously married to John O'Hurley and John Callahan, the 41-year-old admits she was wary of taking the plunge again, but Joe changed her mind.

“He’s really honest. He’s so grounded and down to earth and funny and smart and charming," Eva says. "He’s a great dad. All in this lovely Adonis body!”
