Evening News

INTERVIEW: Scott Bryce
"BuzzWorthy Radio" had a brilliant interview with former AS THE WORLD TURNS star Scott Bryce this afternoon. He was quite insightful in his take on the current state of daytime.

Point-Counterpoint: The Infuriating Holden/Carly Romance on ATWT
Marlena De Lacroix blogs: "What is daytime’s most unpopular romance? Judging from fan complaints, I’d say it’s Holden and Carly on AS THE WORLD TURNS. Here are two characters — wed not to each other — who are or were partners in two separate long-running supercouples.

Well, so what? Since partner switch — and adultery — are staples of soaps, I can’t quite understand why there is such a huge fan outcry against this romance. So I’ve sought guidance from two valued members of Team Marlena: I’ve asked our Patrick Erwin, who dislikes the pairing, to explain the fan hostility he believes is justified. For the other side of the coin, I’ve turned to my longtime friend and ardent ATWT fan, a television writer/producer who wishes to be known only as pjs. He, too, has an explanation for why the fans hate the romance, why the fans are wrong, and why he likes the pairing of Holden and Carly."

WHERE ARE THEY NOW: Paul Anthony Stewart
It's easy to excuse 17-year-old Angeleena Estrada's disbelief when she heard that her lyrics would be sung in a professional musical. The idea seemed a little far-fetched to someone who had never even been involved in her high school's theatre program. "I thought somebody was playing with me," said Estrada, a recent graduate of Gardena High School in Gardena, Calif. "I wanted to see some paperwork as proof."

Estrada was one of 15 Los Angeles-area students whose lyrics were selected for the Reprise Theatre Company's new musical "Free Style," which will be presented July 11 at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood. In an unusual collaboration, Reprise paired the students with members of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers to produce the first set of numbers. The show — hosted by Malcolm-Jamal Warner and featuring Tituss Burgess (Broadway's "The Little Mermaid") and Paul Anthony Stewart (GUIDING LIGHT; LOVING) — explores the lives of L.A. teens by fusing traditional theatre with rap and R&B. "We're bringing pieces and threads of communities together to say, 'Look what happens when we all come together and find a common language that we can all relate to,'" said Matt Gould, director of "Free Style."

TV Squad Soap Report: Only on a soap
Allison Waldman writes: "Soap operas are a funny form of television fiction. They have rules all its own, they can tell all kinds of stories and do them in the most unusual ways. Here's a few things I've noticed lately, things that seem to only be possible, on a soap."

Jesse McCartney and Jordin Sparks Tour Together
American Idol Jordan Sparks and pop star Jesse McCartney are heading out on a co-headlining tour this August. Sparks is the most recent winner of the popular talent-reality-TV-show American Idol. McCartney is known just as much for his teen idol status as his musical ability. Starting his music career in the boy band Dream Street he released his first solo record Beautiful Soul in 2004. He also played J.R. Chandler on ALL MY CHILDREN.
