News Brief

Y&R's Chapman relishes scheming mom role
Tired of banging her head against Hollywood's thick brick walls due to subtle forms of ("non-existent") discrimination facing all film and television actresses over 40, Judith Chapman packed up her makeup and most of her belongings and moved 125 miles east to the spectacular desert setting of Palm Springs, Calif., in 1991. She never regretted the stunning change of venue and the adoption of a new lifestyle, which included teaching drama at College of the Desert for several semesters, plus starring in, directing and producing plays at the local Palm Canyon Theater. But 13 years later, she discovered that she was "getting a little weary" of the desert. Simply, her small corner of the vast Mojave Desert was not enough.

"Something was calling me away and I told my partner, James (St. James), that if got a job in Vancouver, I would probably take it," said Chapman, 62, over a light lunch at the Vineyard Tuscan Grill, the downtown Palm Springs bistro she helps operate with restaurateur St. James when time permits. Striking, she is slim and trim in a loose pink sweater, tight blue jeans and a wide-brimmed straw hat pulled down almost to her blue eyes.

"Then I received a call out of the blue from my agent, saying an actress on the soap THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS wanted out and a replacement was needed," she recalled. Six weeks later, after three knockout auditions, Chapman replaced Joan Van Ark as Gloria - the scheming mother of Kevin Fisher and Michael Baldwin.

We’re all distressed damsels
As for bonding by dishing dirt, don’t give it up, just give it over to the soaps. Soap operas—from THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS (too old-school for me, girl) to THE GAME (those men are fine!) to GOSSIP GIRL (spoiled bratz!) or DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (what happens after you spend your 20s living out Sex in the City)—give you characters and scandalous situations to chat about without abusing people you know. So find a mutually appealing soap (or novel) and lay the track for a new connection.

Y&R's "Nikki" will appear at Lucy-Desi Days
Luci-Desi Days will take place May 24-26 in Jamestown, New York. Melody Thomas Scott from THE YOUNG AND RESTLESS will be one of the celebrity guests in attendance.

Williams' Festival answers globalism with cultural close-ups
It took Tonya Lee Williams, best known as Dr. Olivia B. Winters on THE YOUNG AND RESTLESS, to found Canada’s most diverse film festival in 2001. Now in its eighth year, ReelWorld celebrates international cinema with 57 screenings over the next four days, as filmmakers from Korea, Senegal and Pakistan mingle with homegrown cinephiles.

HOLLYOAKS fans get to write episode
Ever sat in front of the telly, lip curled at the latest storyline in your favourite soap and thought, "I could do better"? Well, now is your chance. The bigwigs at Channel 4 serial HOLLYOAKS have launched a competition to give up-and-coming scribes a stab at fame by penning an episode of the glossy show. "HOLLYOAKS is a vibrant and innovative soap that appeals to its young audience," said Channel 4 commissioning editor for drama Camilla Campbell. "This competition gives one of those viewers a chance to write for the show that they know and love so well and in so doing continues Channel 4's commitment to finding and nurturing new talent wherever possible."

It's all part of the channel's New Talent Month, which aims to give fresh blood a chance to make their TV debut, either behind or in front of the camera, in August this year. Would-be writers are required to submit four scenes based on old storylines from the show, while the victor gets to write their own script alongside the Hollyoaks production team.

HOLLYOAKS girls turn on the style
HOLLYOAKS stars Emma Rigby, Loui Batley and Carley Stenson were among celebrities who turned out for the launch of a new designer boutique. The girls paid a visit to Cello in Birkenhead’s Pyramids Shopping Centre to see the latest collections. Emma (Hannah), Loui (Sarah) and Carley (Steph) were joined by their co-star Ricky Whittle (Calvin) for the opening.

Millions of EASTENDERS fans tune in to welcome back Ricky and Bianca
They haven't yet come face to face, but former East End residents Bianca Jackson and her ex-husband Ricky Butcher are back in Albert Square. And EASTENDERS viewers switched on in their droves to see the actors behind the characters, Pasty Palmer and Sid Owen, appear in the same episode for the first time in six years. An audience of 9.7 million saw Sid's character come back to his old stomping ground to bury his father Frank, as single mum Bianca and her four children were being evicted from their B&B accommodation.
