Race hate plot for EastEnders

EastEnders is to feature a race hate storyline inspired by the Celebrity Big Brother scandal, according to the papers.

The Sun is reporting that both newcomer Jay and bad boy Sean Slater will be seen hurling racist insults at Yolande and Patrick Trueman, in scenes to be screened over the summer.

Current producer Diederick Santer said, "The Celebrity Big Brother race row kicked off as I took charge of my first scripts."

"I thought it was fascinating because it showed there was a real need for a debate about race in Britain. Our stuff won't be overly moralistic but it will tackle this serious issue head on."

Celebrity Big Brother hit the headlines in January after housemate Jade Goody was accused of racist bullying, following insults directed at Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty.

"Big Brother didn't tackle the issue particularly well," Santer said, "so I thought it could be something EastEnders should do."
