COMMENTS FROM THE PANEL:
Claire Labine: (wrote for Mulgrew on RH) I think Mary Ryan, especially as played by Kate Mulgrew in the early years, was sort of the gal I liked to be, and the woman that Paul would like to hang out with. Kate could have been Helen’s daughter, they had the same sort of style. I wish Kate could have stayed. I said to her, “You have to go, you have to see what else is out there.” But it was a blow.

Roger Newcomb: I first noticed Kate Mulgrew's Mary on her return visits to RYAN'S HOPE in the '80s. I consider the best thing ever about SOAPnet is the fact that it allowed many other fans, including myself, to see her original run on the show and the love story of Mary and Jack. What a breath of fresh air and immense talent. Her leaving created a hole in the show from which it never fully recovered.

COMMENTS FROM CO-STARS/CO-WORKERS/INDUSTRY:
Daniel Hugh Kelly: (former RH star) I never worked with Kate on RYAN'S but did appear at a benefit with her years later at Seton Hill College. I was extremely nervous to be on the same stage with her such is her blinding talent. Her voice, her demeanor, her intelligence, her raw talent combined with her natural beauty is simply overwhelming. I would love to do a show with her sometime.

  3. It is wonderful to see Kate's early acting career recognized. She may not have won any awards for it, but she will always be #1 in my book.

  4. Kate Mulgrew was like a young Katherine Hepburn. There was no one like her on soaps at that time. She was unique. And they don't make heroines like Mary Ryan anymore. When I was in college, Kate Mulgrew came to Syracuse to play Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for Syracuse Stage. I was in heaven. As a drama student, I got to see the show for free if tickets were available. I must have seen the show three times.
