WowOWow Columnists Comment on GL/Soaps

WowOWow has published some "celebrity" responses to the following question: GUIDING LIGHT is ending its 72-year run this fall. Is the soap opera passé? If so, what is taking its place?

Liz Smith: "I’m sorry, but I have never had time to watch soap operas — I never have. But I know fans will miss GUIDING LIGHT, and it’s another classic thing that I hate to see disappear."

Candice Bergen: "I am illiterate in the Soap Opera subculture (as well as so much else), as they make me feel nauseous."

Joan Ganz Cooney: "Shortly after I came to New York in the 1950s, I publicized soap operas for NBC. I couldn’t wait for the scripts to arrive so I’d know what happened next to all the characters. Then I’d summarize each day for each soap opera and send off to TV Guide and others that published such information. Even though afternoon soap operas may be fading in popularity (no, I didn’t care about the end of GUIDING LIGHT), I think we still like stories as much as ever, but told in hour-long, better-produced episodes like the SOPRANOS and many other shows, like DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, GREY'S ANATOMY, BOSTON LEGAL, etc."

Mary Wells: "I have never enjoyed soap operas. In fact, I never saw GUIDING LIGHT."

It's interesting that the question was posed but what lame responses. I would have preferred to hear from regular contributors Whoopi Goldberg and Lily Tomlin instead.

  1. It sounds to me like some of these people think just a little bit to hiley of themselves. I think that some of our actors/actresses on soap operas are leaps and bounds better than the acting on many primetime shows. Or they've came from soaps. Someone should of asked them about Tommy Lee Jones, Demi Moore, Josh Duhamel or Hayden Panettiere they all started on soaps

  2. What a bunch of nonsense. If they had nothing to say why not just shut up about it. You would think that people who are in showbusiness would know a little about their history.

Someone should of asked them about Tommy Lee Jones, Demi Moore, Josh Duhamel or Hayden Panettiere they all started on soaps The problem is those actors seem to also want to forget about where they started.

  3. Oh dear lord, I was about to comment on that article but I realize I better not. What a bunch of wannabe intellectuals not to mention the people who actually commented on the article.
Yeah, I am sure they all read Voltaire and Kafka although they did take the time to comment on that awful phenomenon that is Soaps. And Liz Smith? She writes about celebrities dirty laundry for a living.

  4. It's funny the perceptions of soap operas by American actors versus British ones. Some well known British actors, such as Sir Ian McKellen, who a couple of years ago did a stint on Coronation Street (in 2005 he did 10 episodes). Actors move back and forth between stage, soaps, film, primetime without a whole lot of fuss and attitude.

I get the feeling that in the US, some actors cut their teeth, so to speak on the genre but look down on it as a whole. I would say it's a whole lot more work (being almost daily in and out) as opposed to doing prime time or a film where there's long periods of time in between filming. That could be just a big misperception, but it seems that way at times.

    Keep GL on the air!
