"All true histories contain instruction; though, in some, the treasure may be hard to find, and when found, so trivial in quantity that the dry, shrivelled kernel scarcely compensates for the trouble of cracking the nut."
― Anne Brontë in "Agnes Grey"

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1966: Antony Ponzini debuted as Danny Fargo on Another World. Danny hit Missy Palmer (Carol Roux) with his car. He helped her into the car with her wallet left behind on the street. She passed out and woke up at his place where she told him her name was Ann Summers.

1966: On The Guiding Light, Bill Bauer (Ed Bryce) lamented the failed relationship with his son, Ed (Robert Gentry).

1966: On Peyton Place, Steven (James Douglass) gave Ted Dowell (Patrick Whyte) a letter from Martin Peyton that strongly suggested Dowell should hire Steven to work in his law firm. Dowell told Steven that he had always worked alone, but Steven intimated that Dowell didn't have a choice.

1975: Search for Tomorrow co-stars Peter Simon (Scott) and Courtney Sherman (Kathy) were married. Simon went on to star in As the World Turns as Ian before a long run at Guiding Light, playing Ed Bauer. Sherman appeared in and/or wrote for a number of other soaps, most notably As the World Turns.

1981: On Another World, Jamie (Richard Bekins) left Mitch and Rachel's early when Cecile (Nancy Frangione) mentioned starting a family.

1981: On The Edge of Night, Raven (Sharon Gabet) was enthusiastic about her wedding to Sky (Larkin Malloy).  "Raven Alexander Jameson Swift and soon to be Whitney," she said to herself in the mirror.

1982: Dody Goodman debuted as Mavis Cobb in NBC's Texas.

1983: On All My Children, city council candidate Opal Gardner (Dorothy Lyman) held a press conference at the Glamorama.

1984: On Guiding Light, Beth (Judi Evans) tracked Lujack (Vincent Irizarry) down at the beach on horseback.  He got and they rode around with their song, "Almost Paradise," playing the background.

1999: On Another World, Jake (Tom Eplin) apologized to Marley (Ellen Wheeler), who moved out with the help of Tyrone (Henry Simmons, whose wet shirtless scene in this episode is one of the sexiest ever on soaps). Later, Tyrone told Marley he loved her.

2004: Jeff Branson debuted on All My Children as Jonathan Lavery.

2007: The 34th Daytime Emmy Awards were held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Guiding Light and The Young and the Restless tied in the Outstanding Drama Series category.
