― Norman Cousins
"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.
On this date in...
1950: On CBS radio soap opera The Guiding Light (still two years away from its television debut), Meta Bauer White (Jone Allison) called Dr. Ross Bolling and asked him to visit her. When Ross arrived, Meta revealed she wasn't ill and wanted to talk to him about Chuckie, and the issues she has with how Ted treats him.
1966: On Dark Shadows, David Collins (David Henesy) became nervous when Constable Carter investigated his father's car crash.
1975: Late night talk show Tomorrow, hosted by Tom Synder, featured a guest star lineup from the world of daytime soap operas including Joseph Stuart (The Doctors), Agnes Nixon (All My Children), Mary Stuart (Search for Tomorrow) and Bryna Laub.
1981: On Another World, Hannah (Madelon Thomas) and Lenny (Modern Family's Ed O'Neill) held Jamie Frame (Richard Bekins) hostage at the Cory cabin.
1981: On Guiding Light, Kelly Nelson (John Wesley Shipp) confronted Nola Reardon (Lisa Brown) about her lies and manipulations, including making him think he was the father of her baby. The first quarter of the episode featured only Kelly and Nola in their long-awaited showdown.
1983: On All My Children, Angie Baxter (Debbi Morgan) asked her parents to consider raising her baby as their own.
1998: On General Hospital, Felicia Jones (Kristina Wagner) and Mac Scorpio (John J. York) tried to explain to their wedding guests that they weren't actually intending to get married, and all about the James/Tess saga. As they were talking, Felicia and Mac realized how much they really did love each other, and got married anyway.
2000: Former soap star Val Dufour, who played John on Search for Tomorow, Walter in Another World, and Andre on The Edge of Night, died at age 73. He won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Series in 1977.
2000: On As the World Turns, Rose D'Angelo (Martha Byrne), pretending to be Lily Snyder, hosted a telethon for WOAK. After a dance number featuring the women of Oakdale, Katie Peretti (Terri Conn) called in anonymously and challenged "Lily" to sing Holden and Lily's song. Making a quick save, "Lily" sang a new song to signal a fresh start to her relationship with Holden.
2003: Actor and comedian Bob Hope died at age 100. His 1985 special, Bob Hope's Comedy Salute to the Soaps, featured Deidre Hall, Peter Reckell, Joan Van Ark and Diahann Carroll.
2005: On As the World Turns, Carly and Jack went to the hospital to see Rosanna. A nurse told them that Rosanna's baby was ready to come home. Carly told Jack about her promise to Rosanna about taking care of the baby if anything happened to her, but Jack was apprehensive because they already had three children at home. Ben recommended to Carly that they send Rosanna to a coma facility in Switzerland. Also in the episode, Alexandra Chando debuted as Maddie Coleman.
